TrickxTreat! (A Magical BxG game) DEMO UP

#1 Post by Fawn »

11/05/11- THE DEMO IS AVAILABLE! :D You can download it below. (Mac and Windows only as of now, if you need Linux please let me know)

This was supposed to be done by Halloween this year, but due to real life and computer troubles I wasn't able to complete it. However, I hope everyone can still enjoy it even after the season has past. ;)

Summary:
Image

Characters:

Ben Lanton(not pictured): A 20 year old guy trying to find his place in the world. He's a bit clumsy and scares easily; however he can be very strong when he puts his mind to it.

Image

Uncle Carter: Ben's Uncle. He was a great archaeologist when he was younger, and when he retired he built Prosperity's local history museum. He's a bit of a prankster.

Beatrix: Happy-go-lucky yet smart, Beatrix is always helping around the museum. She's also close to Ben's Uncle, and actually calls him "Uncle" herself.

About this project:

This is actually a remake of an old game I never finished. Pretty much everything has changed asides for the love interest becoming a witch. ^^; This will hopefully be my first finished project, and though it is small I've put a lot of effort into it and will hopefully finish it soon...

Game Features:

- 10,000 to 12,000 words estimated

- 1280x760 screen resolution

- 2 endings (as of now)

- 8+ cgs, not including variations

- Royalty free soundtrack from Kevin Macleod; sound effects

Rated 16+ for violence/suggestive themes

PROGRESS:
As of 11/01/11:
Script: 60% done
Sprites: 80% done
CGs: 20% done
Music: 95% done
Sound effects: 30% done

Thanks for the feedback guys :D I really appreciate it.

The demo will hopefully be out by Saturday. It includes the first half of the game. I'm having a little trouble with the GUI (I'm a dumdum when it comes to coding like that) so the demo's GUI will most likely be pretty hideous =v=; If anyone has ren'py know-how to help me de-bug my gui please PM me.

I also had a halloween themed game that I wanted to release but didn't have enough time. Good for you though for going through with it anyway. Good luck!

Played your demo. It was very nice, I liked the music and the colors fit the theme nicely.
Something that happened that was strange... At one point the picture of Uncle dissapeared, maybe it was just a glitch on my end?

Thanks guys :D

@Scarlet: It did :( I was silly and missed that error, I only found it right after I uploaded the game. I coded the graphic's name wrong lol.

That happens. I've run my game a couple times to check script and I miss-spelled an image name.... >.>;;; Oh! Meo is so awesome! :) <--- Meganemoe-ko

Also, important- Are the transitions working right? :( On mine sometimes when I use the "fade" transition the screen goes transparent in between fades.... Does this happen to you?

I didn't notice any problems with the character fade transitions :). Anyway, I really liked the demo. The art and music were good, and the story looks like it'll get interesting. I especially liked the Ben/Bea dialogue towards the end of the demo before she:
transforms into the witch.
Now for my nitpicks:
1) Typos:
  • "a bit tiered" -- [a bit tired]
  • "profession special effects" -- [professional special effects]
2) An odd sentence:
"Heh, it must be that power of the evil spirit that vase represents that made you trip." -- o.O I kinda found that hard to read smoothly :P.

3) An extra name tag, maybe:
For the line: "I lift up the large vase with strange pumpkin-like creatures..." you've included Ben's name tag above the dialogue box. But for his other thought/action lines it's not there. So I guess it shouldn't be on this one?

Best of luck finishing this :).

Thankyou so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it :D I need to get spellchecker for my j.edit... =v=; It's hard to spell things correctly at 1 am haha.

Also, I wanted to ask... Is the title a bit cheesy/too halloween-y? I've been thinking about changing it.

Heh; this probably won't be very useful, but I didn't have any strong feelings for the title either way. So if you can think of a title that you like more then you should change it. Just make sure it has something to do with the game. 'Trick x Treat' sort of gives you an idea of what the game is about, whereas 'Random game with character sprites' doesn't tell you anything useful :p.

A good game... and will really like to see this one completed...
Just noticed a small script typo...

Code: Select all

Ben "I lift up the large ... I'm carrying it."
There shouldn't be Ben there...

/it's not too cheesy... but it is a little bit Halloween...
But if the title relates to the actual story, why change it... if not, change it... :-D
