Man hair!
I want to talk about guys. I'm designing some characters, so I want to get opinions on what is liked the most in a 'sexy/handsome' kinda way.
Do you like long haired guys (Able to be pulled into a ponytail), medium length hair (not ponytail-able, but at least four inches long, I guess?) or short-haired guys (think military haircuts, or like Alistair from Dragon Age: Origins at the longest). Also, how do you think their hair length plays into their personalities? I'd be interested in hearing your opinions.
You don't ACTUALLY have to be a straight woman or gay man to respond, but I am looking for some 'hotness factor' responses.

The best reason to get up in the morning is to outdo yourself: to do it better than you've ever done it before. But if you haven't done it better by nightfall... look at your globe and pick a spot: it's always morning somewhere.

Re: For straight women and gay men
Would this topic be of any use? XD I think you'll end up frustrated, though, because people tend to be rather varied in what they find attractive.

I have read through that, but I want people to focus specifically on hair in this topic.

Re: For straight women and gay men
Well, I personally find the hotness factor to be stronger in the medium length category. Super long just looks really strange, and the super short just doesn't quite have the same appeal. To put it quite simply using BCM, Natsume=yes, Shuuki=no. Using Rising Angels, Jade=yes, Iotor=no.
Other factors obviously come into play, but that is simply based on hair alone.

My common sense is tingling!
Woah! I actually have a website now. It never updates!

Re: For straight women and gay men
Depends on the face etc. =o
I mean, I normally like some hair [like, medium plus minus little], but some guys look really hot with ultrashort - or even none! - hair.
(Okay, I don't really like no hair, but whatever.)
Boys with hair that lets itself pull into a very short ponytail are cool [Anon from X-Note was such a cutie x3], because they often appear creative and relaxed, while some guys look mature and manly with shorter hair.
It's like facial hair - while I wish that some boys would just finally get a trim, others look so smexy.
It always depends on a lot of things and the personality and is something really personal.
If you really want to have the hotness factor or something, you can always show sketches or a text about the characteristics of the character to some people of your target group and ask them what they would change or how they'd imagine the character to look like, so that people won't come to false conclussions when looking at the character.
<= For example a strikt, traditional character, who runs around with a loosened tie, long, messy hair - he might (depends) look extremly sexy, but since it doesn't fit his personality people will get the wring idea and be disappointed
I hope this made sense? xD

Re: For straight women and gay men
ME LIKE TOPIC. HAIR GOOD.
I like ponytails in general, but I have a HUGE lady boner for high ponytails (top of the head). Most commonly seen in ancient Chinese and Japanese hairstyles, but for some reason, they drive me wild:
So, that's my absolutely favorite hairstyle, but I don't know if a modern guy could pull it off. In regards to personality, those 2 characters I posted are really playful, silly guys. So it probably implies a "freebird" sensibility.
In general, I do like long hair, though. Perhaps that is fantastical dreaming, since most modern guys keep theirs short. But if I go to a Renaissance fair, for example, I'm in Happy City™.
I don't mind, even like and prefer, facial hair (so long as it's not a fully grown beard or mustache; those make a guy look way older and out of my dating pool), and it also looks ten times better with long hair. Stubble is very masculine, in my opinion.
And I die, die, die for sideburns! I even love muttonchops because they're just huge sideburns. Nothing makes you instant-sexy to me than sideburns.
Also: bangs. Floppy bangs are what make a lot of hairstyles handsome, I believe. So even bowl-cuts can be awesome.
All that said, I can't think of a hairstyle I don't like. I can find beauty in them all, even when shaven. What bothers me, though, is when everyone has the same hairstyle. And I'm not just talking games, in real life I find a lot of boys are almost militaristic in sharing the same cut. That would be the only case where I would be bothered by hairstyle.
Balding is another story, and I'm generally okay with receding hairlines, and if you're setting your game in Ancient Japan where they had to shave their head, I'm okay with it. If you are constructing a dateable character in any other setting, it would be best to completely avoid bald spots. Or is that just common knowledge? =P
Edit: Don't you think the title of the thread should reflect the topic at hand? Mention hair at least!

Medium length. But it really depends on body type I guess.

Re: For straight women and gay men
In general I do not like short hair. I am pleased by medium or long hair. But it's really not that important a factor. Alistair has totally goofy hair, that didn't stop me from being interested in him eventually.
Still, even in the real world, I have dated more guys whose hair is longer than mine than the other way around.
If you have a large cast of available men, though, hairstyle is a useful way of making them more distinctive. Quite often on tv shows I have difficulty getting the hang of who's-who in a cast with a lot of men because they all look too alike. Sure, in anime-style you can vary the color, but if everyone has the same Manly Spiky Haircut it's still harder to get the hang of which is which. So don't make everyone have the same length! Silhouette-variation good.

Re: For straight women and gay men
I very rarely like short hair. About the shortest hair I commonly find attractive on a man is the "shaggy" hairstyle of the 1960s. If there is character with short hair, he can be redeemed by adding some tufts of hair near his ears, or he can wear an attractive hat.
In general, the more a guy looks like you could mistake him for a lion, the more attractive he is to me. Fringe is essential also. My boyfriend is of Russian-Jewish descent and has very curly black hair down to his shoulders, with curly fringe. He looks a lot like a poodle, or like he is eternally wearing an ushanka. It's sooo attractive and I'll probably sob my eyes out if he ever has to cut it.
Also, I like ponytails, but I think I like long flowy hair even better.
Also, I like sideburns. Bonus points if they're 70's anime sideburns and curl into their face.
How does hair length play into a personality? Well, a lot of guys that I have met with very short hair, or shaved hair, are egotistical, controlling, and mean. Conversely, many guys I have met whose hair is shaggy or unkempt are more laid-back, fun-loving, and kind. Around here it's still a little taboo to be a guy with very long hair, so it also signals to me that they are comfortable with themselves and do not follow the crowd in terms of what is currently considered to be manly. (Around here, this means they will be less likely to abuse animals and treat women badly.)
Of course, there are many nice (and cute) guys with short hair. But in general it's guys with shaggy hair that look best to me. ^_^

Re: For straight women and gay men
I prefer medium hair, like short ponytail, tiny pigtail or even iroquois. Sometimes long hair is sexeh too. Look at Gakupo for example
Re: For straight women and gay men
I like short hair better. I think characters with short hair are more of the "manly" type, and, since I like them manly guys… =D Long hair I just find weird, I don't like it at all. Medium, uh… Maybe if it's tied up? If it's a little shaggy, it's ok, but I usually don't find guys with longer hair attractive. I think the longest type I like is… Uh… Matt Bomer's? (like this http://www.rainy-daze.net/wp-content/up ... -bomer.jpg - it's not long at all) XD Also, longer hair tends to look unkempt/uncared for. When it's something like anime style, with those guys with long, perfect hair… I just laugh at them. Like, uhum, yeah, like anyone would be able to pull off that kind of hair.

Those guys with long, blonde, straight hair.
And I'm just so, so very jealous. D:
I have curls and waves and all this stuff, and my hair is NEVER this tidy. And then I look at them and it's just so perfectly sleek and shiny. ;_;

I flipped to Channel 4 because Twilight was on and I wanted to snicker at it, and was surprised to discover that the head badguy is actually kinda hot. THen I was very confused because his IMDB page shows him as just another cookie-cutter guy who looks really boring and absolutely unappealing. Difference? As evil vampire boy he has HAIR.

Re: For straight women and gay men
I agree with most of them. Real man shouldn't have long hair example Gakupo from Vocaloid. But then it really fits for samurai things. Do you know Dynasty Warriors? I'm surprised how they made hot guys sexy with long hair. But when they stay making it pony-tail, I disapprove as it makes them look like girls.
But for the modern age, short or medium length hair is enough. I really like those anime spiky hair, but not too much as well if it's too spiky.
In the end, it really does depends on the face of the character, and try to matches the personality as well.
Example: Hot arrogant guy = Long sexy hair. Nerdy good looking guy = Short straight hair.
