As a small contribution, I offer some photos from a recent trip to Japan, here.
Also some other photos here. If you want, you can use the ones that don't have people in them. There are some from Kyoto's Fushimi Inari shrine; useful for "Foxtaile," maybe?

By the way, have you played Disgaea: Hour of Darkness? It was easy to mock up this with some graphics cribbed from it. The game has story sequences done with a system similar to this kind of game.
