Loved my drawing until I flipped it horizontally...

#1 Post by xiannuzuo »

Today I've draw a character for my first VN. I thought it was going to be my best drawing ever and I put so much time and effort in this drawing.. But always when I am finally done, I flip it horizontally because I think "your eyes are making a fresh start~".
Disappointed I turn off my pc and don't have the feeling to draw anything in the next half year. (Looook! She has a big bump on her head ;__; )

Do you people have the same when you flip your drawing?
Or do you have some tips for me to improve?

Thank you

Yeah, that happens to me too. But why do you need to flip it, exactly? If it looks good one way, why not keep it that way?

I think she looks lovely either way.

Instead of flipping the picture for a restart, just do something else and look later over it.
Professional artists often put their finished picture aside and look at it one day later. That way they see errors and stuff.
Flipping is the wrong way, many things look weird if flipped (for example, if a cat lean their head to the side, it is ALWAYS the left side (except they are following a movement). Flipping a photo of a cat doing that will result in a weird feeling, even though everything is ok).
I mean, the bump is there, yes. BUT it isn't really noticable on the normal picture, so why getting upset about the flipped image that no gamer would ever see?

If you know you will react like that you should better just leave the pictures alone or directly start a new one.
Or you will ruin your mood for a long time if you do that with every single picture (since you will need lots of pictures for a VN)

Supposedly, flipping the picture will activate more anatomy sensors than if you didn't flip it. It'll be easier to point out where you made something too big or too small, that kind of stuff. A lot of artists do that to check for anatomy errors.

And well, there is a visible "bump" on her head, but it could be the angle of she's leaning to? Maybe if she's leaning forward it makes sense, otherwise you can just shave a little off .n.

flipping is good! I encourage you to flip your artwork ಠ_ಠ

You flip it to see the flaws in your work. then you can learn how to correct that mistake and fix it.
you can also leave the drawing alone for a while and come back and see the errors, or ask a friend to look at and tell you what looks weird
its just another way to check for anatomy errors and other stuff

I'm just saying. I do it all the time ಠ_ಠ

^ Hell yeah.
Don't let them tell you that flipping is bad. ó_o
(Traditional artist sometimes use mirrors for this. I mean, nearly everybody does it, it's extremely helpful.)

A tip for the next time, though - flip it WHILE drawing.
I have a shortcut key for flipping, and I do it while sketching, colouring, to fix things up.
You notice a lot of mistakes that way and it's a nice feeling when your drawing looks fine - flipped or not.

Edit: Btw, I think it looks fine. =)
You can fix the bumb, sure, but frontal pictures aren't problematic, normally.

I didn't know other people flipped too, so that is why I thought it might be a bad thing.. Luckily it is good, so I will flip much more~ I also ask my friends and family, but they cant be critic I think.

Now it is time to fix that bump!

Nah, we're artists, we're allowed to be flippy

You know, I think I might have the same problem as you. I looked at your first image and was like "Wait, what? There's no bump on her head!" Then I looked at the second image and was like "WOAH!" So I'm not sure if it has something to do with right-eye/left-eye dominance or what (my right eye is stronger than my left), but now even as I'm staring at the second picture, it really doesn't look that bad in the first place...

and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past."

Yes indeed~ I really got very much good hope when I finished the drawing.. But then when I flipped it, I was "WOAH!" too.. But I don't think it has something to do with right-eye/left-eye dominance because my stronger eye is left n__n;;

Might seem repetitive, but I agree. O: If you are working on something big O: i recommend flipping it :P but it's okay if it looks good one way~ Like doodles :P

The nice thing is that the more you do it, the less you'll need to fix as you get used to fixing those problems. I like to flip things vertically if I notice something is wrong but can't figure out what.
