Have suggestions for male fashion resources/references?

#1 Post by Wootmuffin »

I'm on the "second draft" stage of my character designs and underestimated how difficult it would be to come up with clothes for men that haven't been done a million times! Anyone know any resources that I could look to for inspiration?

If not, some advice would be great. I usually draw female characters- there's nothing like pleats, eyelets and ruffles to make any outfit pretty~ unfortunately I can't fall back on those tactics to make an interesting design for a man.

So far most of what I've found is "blazer or hoodie with jeans". I noticed a lot of vintage plaid seems to be popular right now too... I'm not feeling too optimistic.

A couple sites I found:

I understand what you mean. :v I think patterns help out, lol.

You could go onto some of the current trendy(??) clothing stores, some listed on this post: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 80#p213056. Maybe study Korean dramas, or a comedy show on TV, or something, as long as it's recent, lol.

Thanks!

Looking through these sites... I still feel like mens clothes aren't nearly as cool as girl clothes... but I guess that's lucky for me, seeing as I'm a girl. :P

Everywhere I look, I'm just seeing lots of blazers and jeans. >.<

Oooh, neat /bookmarks.

As for references, particularly for guys...

http://www.quiksilver.com/category/inde ... Id=2981771 --> Quicksilver, partner brand to Roxy as I mentioned on the post Chocojax linked

http://www.menswearhouse.com/shop/Home_12751_12001_-1_N_ --> Men's Warehouse, mostly for grown men, but hey, worth looking at for ideas to incorporate into new clothing you could draw for yourself

http://www.ae.com/web/browse/hp_mens.jsp --> American Eagle for men (totally recommend looking at the ladies section too).

http://manoffashion.com/ --> Just found this site doing a search on Google.

Anyways, Google is your friend if you're looking for guy clothing or just fashion references in general. Sometimes here on LSF we underestimate the power of fashion (I love Lucky Rabbit Deluxe! since the clothes you dress the main character up in are super cute and it shows good taste) I think one thing I would like to mention is it helps to be familiar with clothing brands of where you're from and see if they have a website since they display their products with nice pictures to reference from.

Except from simply making Google pictures doing the work, I always love to use this page:
Elouai Candybar

It is a doll maker with an almost infinite set of clothes for boys and girls. From summer and winter clothing to chlothes for special festivals (like christmas and eastern) to fantasy clothing and random stuff (for example the adam or tarzan outfit xD)
Whenever I can't come up with a outfit I click through the clothing gallery there (mainly the one for a whole outfit, but you can also search only for trousers or tops).
And she has 3 different boy doll makers (2, 5 and Full) who all have different outfits. So you shouldn't have too much trouble finding something awesome there ^^
I use it all the time for my manga figures.

You could also try things like the dream selfy and tektek, though you'd obviously have to tone down some of the clothing options to look more casual. Works great at helping me think of things, though.

Best thread ever. If only I'd had these links before, my characters wouldn't have to dress like reject Yu-Gi-Oh characters haha.

I like browsing through the men's section of iOffer sometimes. You can pick from a wide range of categories (shirts, pants, outerwear, suits, etc.) on the left hand side.
Complete: a2 ~a due~ (music, language, love)
In progress: The Pirate Mermaid (fairytale otome)
On hold: AXIOM.01 (girl detective game)

Aaaah, of course!
I also often look at the websites from real shops :3
In germany there is a huge amount of online clothes shops that I always browse for some modern, RL input.
So just look for some of those.
It helps especially for stuff like underwear, shoes or jackets since those are rarely in detail in doll makers and simliar sites.

First BAM!!!
and BAM!!! respectively

Second
Well that's the issue. The statement "The clothes make the man" is not a joke. Men, well most of us anyway, can tell quite a bit about the other guy just by what they are wearing. That's why there are only about 200 styles for men.

Shorts mean laid back, suit means business and the like. design, patterning, and color tell us where you are from, how old you are, and what beer you will most likely drink. Fur hat covered with red and/or blue solid block and heavy boots mean cold working area, thicker beer and most probably Russian or Canadian. while Hawaiian shirt means 'fun/annoying guy' no matter where you are. if he's the good guy he will be that big bear character with sage advice. if he's the badguy he will most likely be the loud boisterous and jolly "boss guy" that is probably there for the paycheck and may side with you near the end.

Now if your going for military the outfits should tell you their rank, "power" and who they are well before you ever see their name, nationality or face.

I find polyvore an amazing resource - plus you can use it to combine outfits together and create moodboards quickly.
It's a bit trickier to use for men's fashion, but still pretty good:

http://www.polyvore.com/

Here's an example of a men's style collection of sets:

Also, if you're looking for stylish men with a japanese/asian twist, try googling j-pop boy or j-pop boy band under image search.

The other place to look could be BJD fashion sites such as nine9 style:

http://harajuju.net is great. It's a forum about fashion, so it's got plenty of different styles for you to choose from. I've used models from them (with permission) for several mockups.

Yeah, tell me about it. As a man, I pay twice as much or more to get anything out of the ordinary. A woman can pick up a pair of tall boots for about £20, but a man needs to go to a specialist 'horse' shop and look for riding boots. On the other hand, when I pay three times the price for a pair of boots, I tend to get three times the wear out of them by the time they fall apart...

Men do have the advantage in hats once they get past baseball caps and beanies, I find. Women tend to have few hat options and half of them are very outfit-specific. Men get more options and more freedom to match a hat with an outfit.
