I don't want to sound like a total idiot, but here it goes!
How do you get a background for a VN? Do you have to draw it or is there somewhere that you can get them?
I have NO experience with drawing things like backgrounds so I'm very confused (started creating yesterday)

Well many people do have custom backgrounds for their games that are drawn specifically for that VN. But then there are many people who can't draw and don't have someone who can draw backgrounds for them. If that is the case you can use pictures of places from real life or you can check out the Creative Commons Section on the forum or the premade asset section of the Ren'Py wiki:
http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewforum.php?f=52
http://wiki.renai.us/wiki/Pre-Made_Assets
There you can find already made art that you can use in your own VN. They've got character sprites, backgrounds, and other assets too.

Re: Help with Renpy?
If you are just starting out, using copyright-free images (perhaps with an oil filter over them) is generally the way to go. There is also a plethora of backgrounds you can use in the Creative Commons section of this very forum.
If you are unable to draw or unable to pay, these are really your only two choices. Remember to scale everything to match the resolution you're running your game at too, since renpy won't automatically scale them to fit the screen.

All you need is an image to fill the background. I use MS-Paint ones till I get around to making them.
Also in the Script area of the coding there is this little spot

Code: Select all
# Declare images below this line, using the image statement.
image bg1 = "Background.png" # Background 1
# And a little further down
label start:
scene bg1

To get BG art, you will have to either:
A) Have to go to the free backgrounds thread and find some backgrounds with a free use license to use. Free, but limited to generic locations.
B) Commission (e.g. pay cashmoney) someone to draw them. It's usually $20-50 per BG depending on quality.
C) Learn to draw them yourself.
D) Use a free use photo and put it through a filter. Looks cheap, but useful for really small titles.
