Improvement, Critiquing Possibly?

#1 Post by Hanyuu_Furude »

So it's been quite a bit of time since I've posted anything, and I've been practicing quite a bit.

What do you guys think?

It seems to me that the body is far too thin proportion-wise. It doesn't really have a "curve", it's just straight down. You should work on getting those body proportions right. It would be a good idea to sketch out the entire body even if you are just making a waist-up sprite!

Uh, quickly drew this up. If you can't read anything I wrote, I'll put text over it, haha.

The diagram I copy and pasted: http://saskprocrossfit.com/wordpress/wp ... System.jpg
Remember to look up references while you draw!!

You should probably figure out how the wrinkles line with the shirt. Easy way is to wear a tight tshirt yourself, and see how the wrinkles begin to bunch up where the cloth pulls the most. Even if you're a girl, it should still make sense. The wrinkles are most prominent around chest and armpit area, and are looser in the middle and sleeves.

Hey, I tried a thing but I'm using my laptop touch screen so the lines are kinda wonky sorry sorry

Anyway I won't hark on the face too much since it's stylized, though generally the proportions for a human face is eyes halfway down the entire head, nose halfway between eyes and chin, and lips 1/3 between the nose and chin.
Now obviously no one's going to expect you to take a ruler to your drawings every time, but it's a pretty good rule of thumb, it prevents the forehead from looking too big or the chin too small.

Also the body's a little long and thin, (sorry about my red lines i don't know how to do) I would definitely recommend doing some life studies or just reference from life a little more. It's good to think about where the pecs/breasts are, ribs next, and then hips.

Also don't forget where your light source is! The little eye shine is a very obvious indicator to a viewer where the light is, so make sure your shadows are more prominent when they're further away.
By the way you make very good colour choices I was kinda happy about that

I'm sorry if this is confusing or if i don't know what i'm talking about because I don't lol. Above all else, be sure to practice!

PS: Almost forgot to mention: don't forget ears. They're usually start by eye height and end at nose height. Sometimes they're still visible under hair!

A lot of drawing programs have a lock-line function. You use the line tool and hold shift down. Shift locks the line to fourty five degree angles, so you can make a complete straight up-down line with a mouse. This function also works with constraining sizes with selections.

I think the bottom line here is: References, references, references. Don't draw from memory or what you think it looks like. Remember you're drawing a human being, so look at what human beings look like and THEN draw. Don't draw from what you think a human being looks like!
Even when drawing anime ;) (you may look at anime references to see how they draw hair or eyes or color things, since they're stylisations and representations of humans, but do that AFTER looking at real people photos :) )

And the second thing is to set yourself a goal:
"I want to try drawing as good as *insert artist you like here* by the end of the year!"
And work hard to do that. Maybe the artist you chose is way too talentd and it's too hard for you to reach their level (it happens to all of us "Orz), so try finding an artist that is not as super awesome but that you still like, and so on until you find an artist's style you can look and say "yup, I can do this!" and try your best :) Don't give up until your art is getting closer to what the artist you like can do! Then you can change your goal again and again and mix and match things to form your own style :P

Good luck and keep working hard! ^^

When drawing something, anything, USE REFERENCES!! Use your Google-fu!
Don't trust your memory, and don't blindly trust what others teach you either.
Research, observation, analysis, experimentation and practice are the key! (:
