Looking for someone experienced in matters of law!
Hi, I'm working as writer on the visual novel Lex Virium Attrahendi and we were wondering if we could get someone to advice us on legal matters as this is a very law-orientated VN.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Law is a very broad subject, and it's multifaceted. Could you be more specific?

Well, we're working on a project where most of our main characters are working in a law firm as associates and we have a lot of questions regarding the writing, the scenes and the story progression. That's why we really need someone who can advice us on the legal matters. Things like how we would describe a specific case in a way that will make a reader who knows nothing about law understand it or how to bring about a specific trial, and a whole lot of other things.

Well . . . I'm no expert myself, but my parents are both attorneys, and I've picked up a little knowledge from them. There are different types of proceedings that occur depending on the nature of the case. That's why more information is necessary. What sort of law does the firm practice? Are the characters involved in defending civil or criminal cases? These are important questions to answer.

I could try helping as long as it's just fiction and not real life issues, but what country is it set in? I can only help with US law.
Also, is it civil or criminal practice? I'd be more help with criminal practice, but I guess I could hack through federal level civil practice for story writing purposes, at least. (Just nothing very pornographically specific.)

Many law firms in the USA specialize. Some firms work only family law (divorces, child custody).
Some work only on product liability lawsuits. Some work only on bankruptcy cases.

Fleet's post essentially sums up why more information is necessary. If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend thinking about what type of law the firm will practice. Focusing on a select few legal areas will help you find someone who can help you (and probably also expedite the writing process).

Well, actually, there are also many mega law firms which pretty much do every possible field in America too.

Yes, of course, but I don't think a gigantic firm would work well as a VN setting. The story would have to cover a tiny subset of such a firm. At the very least, it would be more difficult to portray properly than a small law practice, IMHO.

I think the first part can be done by anyone practising or studying law; at least where I study it, we're required regularly to explain things in layman terms.muniiam wrote:Things like how we would describe a specific case in a way that will make a reader who knows nothing about law understand it or how to bring about a specific trial, and a whole lot of other things.
The second part, however. A specific trial's proceedings will depend on the sort of law and the country where it occurs. For example, an American law system involves a jury, and thus the lawyer's job is different from how a lawyer in Europe would work: Convincing a jury of peers (thus laymen) is something different from convincing three judges who get the final say. Someone tried for criminal offences will have different proceedings from someone who's being tried for refusing to pay his parking fines. If you're on trial against the state, you're going to have a different experience from being in a legal scuffle with a wife. Or ex-wife.

Re: Looking for someone experienced in matters of law!
Hi everyone! Sorry for the late reply.
Also, as for specific details: the VN itself is set in Germany, and the main case that the VN circles around is supposed to be a civil rights case against a businessman (there's more to the story) so I guess it would be a civil rights firm. I am open to different suggestions, however.
Thanks.

As a correction to the previous post of mine: I did some research and actually, European countries like their juries, too.
Germany being an exception. They're similar to the Dutch system, or maybe the Dutch system is similar to theirs? Either way, this means a judge will preside and a jury isn't involved. Did you mean civil law or specifically civil rights? Civil rights being things like, "He's treating his employees in an inhumane way", civil law being, "He fired me for sleeping with his wife, but he doesn't even HAVE a wife!"

Nice! Thank you! Well I think she meant Civil law, as in non-criminal law. I was just wondering, are you willing to help us out on some more questions? We really need to go through this really nicely and we feel like we're stuck at the moment because of the legal part of the story, so your help would mean a lot to us! If you're okay with it, maybe we can tell you more about the story and our ideas?Applegate wrote:As a correction to the previous post of mine: I did some research and actually, European countries like their juries, too.
