How would it seem if the game itself had very simple chibi sprites... But the more serious CGs were full-on characters?
I'm trying to cheat make my job a little easier by using very simple chibi sprites in order to focus on the plot rather than the art which is holding up my other games.
It might depend on the game and such, but I've seen this done in commercial video games before and sometimes it can work quite well. I think it really depends how you do it, but I'd probably play it if I liked the story and such. o3o
If you feel better and doing chibis and are afraid regular sprites won't come good, it can be good. You can focus more on CGs and make them better and easily make chibi-sprites. If that's what you're planning, then it can be succesfull
How simple could they be?
Could expressions be left to the imagination or should there be at least a mouth and/or eyebrows?
The test sprites I've made look like little expressionless dolls right now.
I made them with outfits... But, their bodies are all one flat color with a little bit of dodge tool on the face to give it a rounder impression.
I personally thing it might at least be good to have eyebrows. I've seen games done with and without mouths, and depending on how you do them, it can either come out great or really, really bad because of it...So it might depend. Leaving some to the imagination is good, but too much can make it sorta boring for some people? I guess that's more or less what my meaning is.
Yeah... I guess I'll just have to see when I get a demo out...
I would post the actual images. But, they're on a different computer and I can't move them any time soon...
I personally think sprites are more important than cgs since you see them the whole time and cgs are shown for just a couple of scene, a game may not have cgs at all. And it's also much easier to make sprites, so why not focus on them and don't make cgs if you want to cut down art?
What kind of story are you making? I don't think chibies, and the ones without expressions at that, will fit many genres.
Makai Dokis! Disgaea is a fangame, but different artists collaborated in it and I think it might be similar to what you're referring to? You could give it a try and see?
