And without further ado, the results.
I thank everyone who participated, and Auro-Cyanide for putting together this infographic in record time.

Any plans for releasing the data about games played in the past year? I can imagine it's pretty variable but it would be interesting to see it compared with age (e.g. average number of VNs played in the past year for 19 year olds).

Wow, this is fascinating stuff! I had no idea the ratio of creators to non-creators would be so close to even. Thanks to everyone who put this information together!!

wow fascinating! thank you for collecting the data and making it easy for us to see and read ^^!
i'm not surprised that the number of female players is more than male and other, but is it because of the system itself (the VN playing style of long story and short actions required) or because of the content itself focusing more on girl-pursue-boy(s) ?

I saw this in deviantART earlier and it was really nicely done! Thanks for putting this together. c: As for the larger female VN player population, I think it is due to the ratio of otome games to non-romance or bishoujo but... Just a theory, though.
Do you guys plan to make another infographic? I'm quite interested now on what VN genres are mostly made/played.

I think it's vice versa, there are many otome projects (not finished games though) because there're more girls present who want to create them.

They're mutually reinforcing. There are more female EVN enthusiasts because there are more games for them. There are more games for female EVN enthusiasts because there are more female EVN enthusiasts making games.
I sort of wonder if the nature of the medium (emphasis on storytelling over gameplay, emphasis on characters and relationships, more space to explore tertiary facets of human interpersonal connections that are often glossed over in other media etc.) that also helps - or at least served as a catalyst earlier on. I definitely think the established community is the main factor nowadays though.

I'm actually curious as to why the large majority of the Japanese VN community are male while the large majority of the English one are female.

Because the medium began in the early 80s with incredibly low quality pornographic games aimed exclusively at men and there hasn't been enough of a shakeup to change the momentum.
