Recently playing Phantasy Star Online2... and this is the first time I actually choose the male character (Male Cast) because he's so damn COOL!!!

I generally chose female if I have the choice, but I do enjoy playing as a male from time to time.

Both actually, though for games like pokemon or harvest moon, I just have to be a girl . But for vn's I usually play as both characters with different files

Re: Do you play as same or opposite gender?
Depends on the game.
If it's a Pokemon game, then I'll likely play female, opposite my gender.
If it's a VN, I'll likely play a BxG or GxG game more so than a GxB / otome game. I want to spend time interacting with cute girls!
Might be missing a few more, but otherwise, it doesn't really matter who I play as.

As in, if the game gives you an option? Same, but sometimes opposite just out of curiosity. I recently replayed Misao as a guy, and...it was okay. I'm kind of disappointed that it doesn't carry over into the epilogue, though.

Re: Do you play as same or opposite gender?
I mix up the genders I play as. If the optional characters have different backstories or plots, I'll play whichever one I find more interesting. When it comes to romance games, I'll only play xB paths, but I'll play as either a girl or boy. For RPGs, I play as a girl to dress her up and get the unique scenes that come with it (i.e., you get special dialogue branches in Dragon Age and Skyrim (and if I remember right, Fable as well?) for playing as a girl). For third person games, I prefer to play as a guy because... Well, dat butt tho ;3 And I could care less in most shooters or action games, but I still wish more of them had the option to play as either gender.

Hmm it depends on a few factors, like genre, themes etc.

I've actually never played as the opposite gender in a game that gave me a choice. Now that I've typed that out, I feel kind of weird.

Re: Do you play as same or opposite gender?
I am almost always playing a girl in my games (I focus on story-rich pieces like VN's). If there's an option to be a guy, I'll still choose to be a woman. It just feels more natural to play the same gender.
But, if I think he will have a better prospective (i.e. the girl is a doormat/please-everyone/really subservient character), then I'll definitely choose him.
Honestly, I'm in it for the story. Gender choice is a habit, but it won't matter so long as I'm getting a great experience out of it.

Re: Do you play as same or opposite gender?
I never choose same gender (male) when I have the choice.
I like stories where the main character is female (e. g. Kokoro's parts in Remember11).
The problem is, there's often some fan-service, which is lame.

Re: Do you play as same or opposite gender?
I almost always play as a character that is the same gender as me (female). That could be because I generally prefer otome/GxB games, but then again, I also dislike playing as a male in other sort of games. If I really can't choose a female character, I'd rather play in a first-person mode that doesn't show the protagonist.
Re: Do you play as same or opposite gender?
I always play as a female (same gender) if I can help it.
That is, unless I have already played a game and want a different experience for the second playthrough.
I love being girly, so. Playing as a male first is not really the kind of thing I would do, without good reason.

Re: Do you play as same or opposite gender?
First of all im a female in real life. But since I enjoy playing Melee/OffTank characters on Online Games, I play the male avatar. (Unless I play with my boyfriend where I pick the class Healer) But I make sure to make a dash of feminine charm to my male avatar (like picking the long hair, having it wear cute accessories and make it wear light colors)
Most PS1 and PS2 rpg games that I encounter has Male protagonist so I dont mind playing male char
I have tons of VN games both male and female (since Im more into the story)
BUT if the theme is Romance of course Ill pick the female as a main char

Re: Do you play as same or opposite gender?
I usually start off with male (same gender)... but if it's a game that allows for you to choose and has different content for each, I almost always replay it from a female perspective as well. And if one of the the options is the "default" or easier difficulty, I'll start with that, even if it's a female character.

Sometimes I pick the mc gender base on the looks. But I agree that playing your own gender is more natural.
