I also found this video on Gravity Falls that may be helpful (watch halfway in).

TL;DR: Basically, they're saying that it's the character that leads the identity, not the trait/politics/argument/cliché/etc. So as long as the character carrying the cliché is interesting and entertaining, you can get away with a surprising amount of stuff.

Pfft, but there isn't a plot as nothing actually occurs.
But I think the point is that there is a difference between overused tropes and needed tropes. Everyone likes different genres, after all, and genres are defined by tropes
