That looks right. Did you save it in your renpy folder? Then open with the Ren'Py launcher?

I'm not sure if other VNs do this, but what do you guys feel about the player character (protagonist) being on screen as often as the characters he/she interacts with?

For example, I know the vast majority of VNs have you looking at other characters through the eyes of the protagonist and characters talking through your monitor. The protagonist rarely shows up except for occasional full screen CGs (if any).

I'm split right now between letting the protagonist mix with NPCs and going the traditional route and keeping him off screen pretty much the entire time.

In the last day plus, I did little to no scenario writing and instead was working on the character database the player will have access to throughout the game.

Side menu:

Here the player can collect character cards (students category shown):

Fields are dynamic and can be updated as the player finds out more about the characters he interacts with:

Also a reverse side that'll be used for backstories:

You actually put this together quite well imo. It's bed time for me right now but I'm gonna try the demo tomorrow.

I'm excited for the new character art! Sprites all include a few alternate poses and 5+ facial expressions each.

Updated demo, description from the original post:

Mediafire Download

Demo currently covers two "segments," both of which are incomplete at the moment.

Vast majority of content is dialogue as the beginning is designed to just introduce a few characters and get the ball rolling. There is no plot per se in the demo. You'll reach a point where the game will just go back to the menu, so don't worry about that :P

Hopefully it's enough to get a feel of what the system is like. As the game progresses, it will be slightly more open world where you can pick and choose what to do each day (outside of fixed events).

Other notes:
- Backgrounds are all placeholders
- Some sprites are still placeholders
- Character card text are mostly placeholders
- You can't do anything with character traits yet
- A bunch of flags and affection points can get collected, but you can't do anything with them yet

Making some major aesthetic changes to this game.

1) Changed resolution to widescreen 1920x1080

2) Revamping all character art thanks to my kid brother who's now helping me out.

School uniforms are also currently under design.

3) Background art is currently WIP and the ones I'm using are still placeholders. But now I'm going for a more "high level" feel for the atmosphere.

Last but not least, for:

Here you go. Close enough. Maybe I can take this somewhere in the future.

Sample of the super, super early alpha test battle system I'm working on. Based in part on wholetonegames' code.

I'm going to need to add:

- Type effectiveness
- Damage scaling based on levels and individual stats
- Party system and ability to swap out Pokémon
- RNG like missing and dodging

So far there's RNG for critical hits and trigger effects like poison.

Graphics will come last. Will include SFX and... not quite sure how I'll tackle attack graphics. Maybe something that just flashes on the screen. Will need to experiment.

Hi there!

I just finished playing the demo. I have to say, as a huge Pokémon fan, I absolutely loved it! (Oh Nintendo, please don't shut this down!)

I'm curious about what other features you're going to add in the future. Aside from the battle system, will there be Pokémon exams, or something of the sort? Personally, I'm actually not that interested in the battle system since if I wanted to battle, I could just play the actual game instead, hahaha. Since this is set in a school though, I sure do hope there would be a theoretical Pokémon exam included as a minigame! :) (Something like, Pokémon facts, gen. knowledge about the Pokeverse, things like that, hahaha.)

(Yeah, I know, the hidden nerd in me who enjoys Pokémon exams is shining through.)

Anyway, good luck with this! I wish you all the best. <3 And please, don't drop this project, alright? I'm sure plenty of Pokémon fans out there will be thrilled when they hear about this fangame. <3
