Not all characters need multiple layers, lengthy backstories, or complex motivations. Sometimes it's fine to keep them simple. Especially if this project is just practice. It might be wise to keep your story short and uncomplicated.

Is there anything that will help make sure your story stands out among other school-based love polygon visual novels?

I'm really bad at choosing color palettes for characters so I always go for "natural" colors. I tried those and also something more animu!

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Off-topic: I still remember being a new anime-manga fan in the late 1990s. There were a lot of programs available at the time that were easy to differentiate from each other. It didn't matter whether I loved them (the 1997 "City Hunter" movie, the "Blue Seed" TV series) or whether I loathed them ("Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals").

I made this idea as simple as posible because I have an history of super twisted and dramatic videogame designs that never saw the light of day because I made it too hard for anyone to understand or code. So yeah. Press the button to win.

This story will be completly clichéd and forgetable!! At least, I hope so. Unless I follow classic archetypes, I'll go crazy planning dramatic events, twists, new characters, deaths.... And I really need to keep this simple.
