Japanese language Pokemon... thing, in progress

#1 Post by Qu-ko »

Working title: ポケットモンスター ダイヤモンド・パール:ad lucem

...Yes.

I am into mainstream anime. I hate myself and I want to die. :D

Though, I ditched the GX project due to all-around lack of interest everywhere I asked about it, even on my devART, so I'm doing a new one. It is a POKEMON DIAMOND AND PEARL game (based on the two games, NOT the anime), and it is very very cliche.

...But also slightly original.

But not much.

Might be because I'm writing the whole thing in Japanese, so I can claim that title of first Japanese language game in Ren'Py... I hope. If I can finish it before someone else decides to do one.

I'm just doing it because the idea for this has been in the back of my mind for a while, and since DP is my current central obsession, I figured this would be a good way to get it out of my system. AND I can practice my moon runes this way! Oh yes.

In a bit of a role reversal, you play as Hikari (Dawn) and the love interests are male. Hooray. So it's kind of oriented at girls, but I suppose boys would enjoy it too if they like that kind of stuff.

It's a game that does not involve battling for the most part (oh woe), but there might be... actually, there WILL be some menu-function battles with set outcomes. Especially for one particular route *cough*.

Speaking of routes, there's at least five of them. I'm thinking that choosing a love interest is mandatory or the game automatically chooses for you (based on points), because I can't think of an ending without one. So I'll probably put the options in a preference order for the game (is that possible with Ren'Py?) in case of a tie.

I intend it to be a semi-long game, with a good number of CGs, and this time I'm actually motivated to do it, so it's not going to drag along as slowly as it would if I weren't arsed to do it. I'm the only one doing this project, and all the material is by me, with the exception of music (which is being obtained from sites that have placed their music in the public domain and have explicitly stated that their music CAN be used for things like games, etc. without written permission in their copyright/terms notice; yes, there are some from Japanese sites that say the same thing in their copyright notice, I translated them roughly).

...Oh, yes, it would help to state the endings, wouldn't it. Haha.

- Jun (DP rival, IIRC his English default name is Damion)
- Kouki (Lucas, Rowan's assistant)
- Gen (Riley, that one Aaron ripoff... shut up)
- Denji (Volkner, emo Sunyshore gym leader, oh yay)
- Hyouta (Roark, Oreburgh gym leader; ENTIRELY someone else's fault)

I'm definitely including other characters besides these guys, though, including (but not limited to, yet):

- Shirona (Cynthia, ze champion)
- Kurotsugu (Palmer, Battle Tower Tycoon and Jun's father)
- mentions of Hikari's father
- Ayako (Johanna, Hikari's mother)
- Jun's mother (who needs a name, argh)
- Nanakamado-hakase (Professor Rowan, obligatory appearances)
- where there's Hyouta, there's Natane (Gardenia)
- Mikan (Jasmine) will appear briefly
- ...was thinking of throwing Akagi (Cyrus, [former] Team Galactic leader) in there for a special reconcile scene, dunno if I will

And I did a rough flow chart (VERY rough, subject to change/be added to) of how I foresee things, (yes, it sucks, yes, it is full of sarcasm and such). See attachment. I know the endings look pretty boring so far; that's definitely going to change given a little time and thinking. It's just a rough draft, after all.

...So, lastly. I'm actually in the process of making a random demo movie with Adobe Premiere using the CGs that I have of various things throughout the game, so I'll put that up when I finish it.

Um... I know we have some Pokefans here, so... comments, suggestions?

...Maybe please? :>

EDIT: Oh, right. One last thing.

I was CONSIDERING making this an eroge.

Considering.

I mean, since some people might be turned off by the idea that Hikari is so young, even though I'm upping her age a little (...okay a lot) to like 15-16 so it's not total pedophilia. >>;

I mean, I've no problem with drawing porn or writing it or anything, it's just... don't know if this would subtract from the overall interest.

Thoughts?

I was reading through the entire thing muttering to myself, "Oh boy... Another pokemon fangame..."

And then I got to the eroge part.

You're my new hero. ^_^ That would definately take Pokemon to never before unexplored places... Lawlz. Although I never, ever imagined making an eroge fangame when I played through Pokemon... o_o;

Awwwwww........ Too bad I won't be able to play it since I don't know any Japanese... >_<;;

XD Sorry? Yeah, I know, the idea of a Pokemon fangame is old and has been done before (and probably done better), but... I wanted to give it a shot anyway. If it sucks, oh well, then it won't get very far. But eh.

Well, that's one vote for an eroge? Haha, yay. I'm kinda rooting for it myself, but I don't want to turn anyone more off from the game than I have to.

And... I'll probably translate it into English afterwards or put up an outline of the events (does Ren'Py require regional language set to Japanese to play Japanese games, I wonder?), but I'll release the Japanese version first, most likely.

No. Ren'Py treats everything as Unicode, so there's no difference between languages, provided you have the proper fonts, and don't use renpy.input.

I'd love a Pokemon fan-game! Eroge would be cool, but I'd like a Pokemon visual novel anyway. I love Pokemon D and P! :)

Could you also release a version in English? I don't speak/read any Japanese, so maybe two versions? It's more work, but it would assure that many people on these forums could play the game. :D

Yeah, I've pretty much decided there's gonna be two versions, but I'm doing the harder one first, the Japanese one. Mainly because I want the honor of being the first to make a Japanese language Ren'Py game. :3

I like the idea of it, though I'm not really interested in eroge. Could there maybe be a way to skip those scenes? I know there seems to be more interest in it.

Theres no shame in putting out another Pokemon game, since in my opinion each writer will always bring something new to the table. It's impossible to look at two different writers and say there is different because any decent writer can always tell. I won't be able to read the Japanese version :/ but I don't think you should consider already thinking it won't get anywhere. Just keep working for yourself.

Oh I also throw another vote for Eroge :D Though all you need to do is say they are 18 and they could look 7 (aren't disclaimers great?)

They don't look 7, lol, don't worry. :P

Thank you for the encouragement, though. XD I'm definitely working hard on this one, and I'm getting it done at my pace, which is actually pretty good because I never get things done. It's probably just going to be something to play around with Ren'Py's functions and show off various art skillz before I move on to an original game, nothing epic or anything, but I expect it to be somewhat long with all the stuff I want to do with it, hehe.

Again, thanks for the comment. I'll keep everyone posted if/when I hit a milestone? ^^;

Oh darn I think I'd prefer if they were 7....hmm haha anyway it's probably good to finish one project before moving on to something of larger scale. I understand what it means not to finish things...boy do I, but the important thing is to keep writing for yourself and ride the support people show.
