Need advice on making sharp buttons that look good in Ren'Py

#1 Post by TheOtherNewGuy »

I'm currently working on replacing the text with image buttons, but compared to the smooth text my buttons look less focused, a bit blurry.

I've never really had to make sharp buttons before, or just buttons that look pleasing in visual novels, so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Wondering if there's a smarter way to do this than just try to make a small image look as clear as possible by hand.

For my first attempt I made a circular button that's 59X59 pixels wide with about 150 dpi. It's a raster image. I'm aware of vector art, but this button is rather complex and I've never made any complex shades a vector image before, and i dont even know if renpy can use vector. Edit: nevermind, just found out that it doesn't use vectors.

But yeah any suggestions you can think of would help.

Can you show screenshots? It seems to me that you are trying to scale small image up and that leads to problems.

You know, I just messed around with the darks and lights of the button and made the drop shadow I was using as solid as the text drop shadow and that seemed to help it match.
It was strange because I actually went from a larger image to a smaller one. Didn't realize that would blur things just a bit, yet still not half as bad as blowing it up.

I'd hate to have this be a wasted thread, but I'm sure I'll get your help with something else. I see a lot of questions ahead.

Feel free to delete this thread, unless someone still feels like giving some general tips maybe itll help someone else.
