Visualing the VN Market
To what extent could you map out the VN scene? All the various fandoms, the EVN vs JVN split, translated vs untranslated. Using the VNDB voting stats, I did a little analysis of the VN fandom and came up with some clear clustering. I hope you enjoy it~

I'd love to hear any suggestions for other categories to investigate as I'll do a follow up post in a week's time.

Re: Visualing the VN Market
Cool article, and that bubble network seems like a real goliath of coding and tweaking to make. My condolances. While I'd rather consider myself unbiased and unbound to genre, I too would fall heavily in one or a few categories due to not playing some of them. ANd the ones that are spread out, are indeed the ones I wouldn't reject or play solely on their gameplay mechanics or genre. Perhaps there are a lot more mixed Yaoi fans, but they just don't want to leave comments and ratings connecting their username to that genre...

Favourite sentence:
Nekopara and Sakura series ... as people who read either of those series don’t go on to read many other VNs.

Jeez!Analysing the map from the top, we see the porn cluster stands erect.
No, sorry! You must be mistaking me for someone else.

Re: Visualing the VN Market
Oh god, tweaking the maths on that graph was a nightmare. Initially it was like watching a black hole form, you'd get a super tight cluster that collapsed down to one super dense dot, with a distant halo of unrelated VNs floating through the void. A big problem early on was with the heavyweights of the VN fandom, Katawa Shoujo, Fate/Stay night, and Steins;Gate forming a tight cluster and pulling in everything else to it in a super tight ball. We had to add in a repulsion factor according to size, so larger beachballs caused bigger waves. That kept the big beasts far enough away from each other enough to get some interesting results.Mammon wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2017 2:43 am Cool article, and that bubble network seems like a real goliath of coding and tweaking to make. Hehe. You should have seen what my initial draft said, "we see the porn cluster ejaculating over the top." That was just a little too gross a mental image for me to keep though.

Re: Visualing the VN Market
One thing I wonder about with your data. It relies heavily on vndb. I'm almost exclusively a OELVN fan...and on top of that, I don't tend to play many OELVNs that are modeled off of JVNs in aesthetic. For example, I started Katawa Shoujo and couldn't get very far in, yet I really love Cinders. That sort of thing. Because of this, I never used vndb. If I liked JVNs or more JVN adjacent OELVNs, I'd probably use it. But I have never left a review and I never even use the site. I wonder if other OELVNs folks are similar? And if so, how that might impact your data?
A Close Shave:
*Last Thing Done (Aug 17): Finished coding emotions and camera for 4/10 main labels.
*Currently Doing: Coding of emotions and camera for the labels--On 5/10
*First Next thing to do: Code in all CG and special animation stuff
*Next Next thing to do: Set up film animation
*Other Thing to Do: Do SFX and Score (maybe think about eye blinks?) Check out My Clock Cookbook Recipe: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 51&t=21978

Re: Visualing the VN Market
Oh I meant to include a criticism section in my analysis post about that. You're exactly right, the VNDB data is pretty biased towards certain types of content due to the types of fans that use VNDB. From past analysis, VNDB tends to undercount OELVN and Otome VNs significantly. So I wouldn't take the results I presented as gospel, they're only a glimpse into how the VN Market looks.trooper6 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2017 2:34 pm One thing I wonder about with your data. I don't know if the porn cluster itself stands erect...but Little Dick certainly does. That was a, um, nice touch.Analysing the map from the top, we see the porn cluster stands erect.

Man, this is really interesting. I admit, I feel pretty cool seeing RE: Alistair++ has a stake in the otome community, and that Jisei and Ripples seem to be liked by both clusters. (If I'm reading it correctly.) It's also nice to see western VNs all over the place in terms of genre. Thank you for your hard work on this!
