Release style of Ren'Py vs. Debian (Linux), differences?

#1 Post by llirium »

There isn't any specifically "stable" version of Ren'Py, right? The release process seems different from Debian (Linux), which has stable, unstable and testing branches of the same software in three different repositories.

In Ren'Py's case, just downloading the "latest" version is all you need, so far as I can tell. Is it the same with GitHub, or are those releases more "bleeding edge"? (not talking about the Nightlies, just what's released on GitHub.)

Renpy has three versions accessible through both the website and the built in update function.

Release: latest stable build
Pre-release: latest build which may be unstable
Nightly: cutting edge, these builds may not work at all
Warning: May contain trace amounts of gratuitous plot.

I'm not seeing much info on which is which on the renpy.org website (patch/bug fix release was a term I caught sometimes in the Announcement pages, but not the complete Changelog) or GitHub (no specific tags, ie. stable/pre-release/nightly), so I'm a little lost. Where is this info; did I miss it somewhere?

Hmm. You're right actually. I'm not seeing anything listed other than stable releases.

I actually use debian, the current ren'py package is 6.99.12.2 but ren'py don't depend on the *nix directory system, so one can run more recent ren'py sdk's in their home directory, e.g. ~/opt/renpy-7.x.x

I have ren'py 6.99 globally installed from the debian package together with 7.2.1 locally installed in my home directory. And I think is a good setup.

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.

Where is some of this information listed? If you are in the Renpy launcher and click update, it will take you to a screen with the update channels...which have an explanation of them.

I'm looking at the list right now and it says:
Release. March 16, 2019. 7.2.1.457. Recommended. The version of Ren'Py that should be used in all newly-released games.

Nightly. March 28, 2019. 7.2.2.481. The bleeding edge of Ren'Py development. This may have the latest features, or might not run at all.
A Close Shave:
*Last Thing Done (Aug 17): Finished coding emotions and camera for 4/10 main labels.
*Currently Doing: Coding of emotions and camera for the labels--On 5/10
*First Next thing to do: Code in all CG and special animation stuff
*Next Next thing to do: Set up film animation
*Other Thing to Do: Do SFX and Score (maybe think about eye blinks?)

Is there some way to configure that? Last time I did it, some days ago, it updated automatically to 7.2.1.457 without asking. Not that I'd want other thing, I'm not interested in experimental versions, but I'd like to have more control about what I install.

So it's listed in the SDK Launcher's UI, that's what I wanted to know. :)

Thanks for the information, everyone!

Metalla, every time that I click the update button, I’m brought to the screen to choose which of those two channels I want to use. So nothing happens automatically, I have to choose each time.

I just checked it and it works like you say. Could be that the launcher forced the update to latest stable version because I never updated the program since the install about half a year ago? It's either that or I was too drunk to remember it... Anyway, thanks
