Is 1920x1080 is a good resolution?

#1 Post by isobellesophia »

Hellow everyone, i had some discussion about the game size..

Well, as for today i made a novel for who is only speaking to the player, i was realizing about the game resolution...
1. Is it recommended to use a 1920x1080?
2. And what will be the result of the resolution when imported to android? or is there any possible errors? (for example, the resolution is a bit bigger.)
3. Does it look like it is too bigger than 1280x720?
4. Is there some people using 1920x1080 resolution?

I know that some people had obvious answers, but i just want to know, especially when imported to android... it may cause alot of errors can occur.. :)

I was focused on my character sprites.. i hate when i draw it on smaller dimensions.. though. :)

Thanks you. And sorry for the bad english.

Resolution can shrink to the device's screen size. 1920x1080 is more common for today's use so I'd personally recommend it because a lot of people will have a 1920x1080 monitor and will play a 1280x720 game which will appear blurry because 1280x720 is being stretched onto a 1920x1080 resolution screen. It isn't extremely important though, it just depends on if you want your game to appear sharper/nicer. Some people even go above 1920x1080 because larger resolutions can always fit to a smaller scale and look really clean and crisp. You won't get any errors.

A default Ren'py template includes allowances for small screens and mobile devices, automatically adjusting things as necessary (and sometimes causing more work for customised GUIs)

1280*720 scales up by a factor of 2.25 when displayed on a 1920x1080 screen. In my own experience, blur is hardly/not noticeable. It is usually the other way around that's an issue, Scaling down crushing colours and destroying fine details.

@Imperk3ft. Interesting, I have to agree. I've started projects at 1280x720 and ended up changing everything to 1920x1080 because the graphics were horrendous to look at in full screen. If I wanted a crisp game, I'd have to always play in a tiny window to enjoy looking at the art and also the custom GUI I made in photoshop (which I obviously had to remake once upgrading the resolution) so full screen looked good but windowed looked better. For me anyway.

Well for me, why i choosed 1920x1080 since i started RenPy is becuase of the character SPRITES. They tooked me an hour to fit it in the 1280x720 screen... so 1920x1080 is easier and i don't really care about how big it is, i was focused on the art and also the character and other button styles to see. Texts and such. When i draw, well.. as i said in my post, i don't really like smaller dimensions of the image and also the characte, i want them big so my character can be really seen perfectly.. So 1920x1080 is fine i guess?

I know that 1920x1280 resolution can be resized when grabbing the window screen..

In my opinion, 1920x1080 is the MINIMUM resolution you should make your game in. Most people have full HD screens, and more and more people are starting to have 4k screens. If you're only making your game for mobile and storage space is an issue, then a smaller resolution might be ok, but if you're planning to release for PC at all then I don't see any reason my you'd make your game lower resolution than full HD (1920x1080), except if your game is intentionally a low-res pixel art game or a game that's otherwise supposed to look "retro" as a stylistic choice.
