I've been using Ren'py for a while now and I have an idea for a gameplay mechanic which is a top down grid based tactical game.
I'm curious to hear what people have to say. Should I try and make it in Ren'py or maybe move to one of the other systems (like Unity).
I'm more of a writer than a programmer, but it seems like an interesting challenge, but at the same time I'd like to be using the right tools for the job.

Wow, comparing Ren'py and Unity feels pretty strange, like it's not really clear what you want to do. Both programs have really different goals.

I was going to suggest Sunrider as an example also after it was suggested to me once.
