Epic Game Store now open to self-published indies

#1 Post by Twoflower »

Interesting development today!

https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/news/ ... publishers

The Epic Game Store just opened its doors for anyone to walk up and distribute a game on their platform, like Steam and Itchio.

There's one drawback -- you MUST have support for their achievement system. Right now, RenPy doesn't have API hooks for that, it only supports Steam. Maybe support could be added in the future, to open the platform to RenPy developers?

You only have to include Epic Store achievements if the game is sold on other PC storefronts with achievements. So if your game just doesn't have any, you're good.

I'll probably have to remove all mine - I've fallen foul of this requirement as well

Yeah, I don't think the answer is "just remove the achievements." It'd be better to implement them and tie it into the RenPy achievement system, so you can have feature parity across all platforms.

Unfortunately, I can't get the Epic achievement library working, so I'll probably leave things for the time being.

I really disliked the Epic Store - it is so obtuse (and I thought Steam was bad enough). It's taken a month to get get close to release (as I had to buy a website with SSL) as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it's done to try and keep indie developers away.
