A creative use of AI rendering for VNs

#1 Post by RewindTheGame »

I thought I'd share how I've been using AI to enhance the images in my game, since it's not immediately obvious that you can do some of this stuff but the result can be quite incredible.

Firstly, I'm rendering all my images in Daz Studio - so no AI is involved in the basic rendering process (except in the case of one of two background scenes for which a standard render just wasn't coming out right). Once the images are rendered, I then transfer them to my iPad and pass them through a piece of AI software called Artist.ai. This software allows you to specify an image on which your AI generated image should be based, and a percentage to which the resulting image should resemble the original. What I do is pass it each of my original images, and tell it to return an AI rendered version that is 98% the same as the original. To all intents and purposes, this means I get back exactly what I put in, but rendered from scratch by the AI.

But here's the kicker. Artist.ai only renders low resolution preview images, but once you have the AI image back you can tell it to re-render it in Quad HD. So that's what I do, resulting in a super high resolution version of my original image with much finer details. It's still essentially the original image, but as though it's been repainted by a more professional artist. Using Photoshop, I then reload the original image, paste the new version on top of it and scale it down to the right size - and the beauty of this part of the process is that, because the new image is a higher resolution, you might discover that it actually looks better zoomed in to a different level or as a closeup instead of a distance shot, etc.

I have to say, I'm impressed how well this works. The only downside is that AI isn't very good at rendering faces at a distance so a certain amount of Photoshop work is required where there are people in the background that you don't want to look as though they've been fed through a woodchipper in a horror movie - although Artist.ai also has a tool to fix faces which can mitigate this on occasion.

Other AI tools are available :)

One thing to note about this is that many store fronts, steam especially, require you to declare any use of AI in your game, even if it's just redrawing your own art

Absolutely. It's a bit ridiculous considering pretty much everything is going to be at least partially AI aided before long, but sure. It's like everything - at some point things just become normal and everyone wonders what all the fuss was about. This is a good use of AI to clean up manual renders, so nobody ends up out of a job :)

Declaring AI use might seem odd now, but it's just part of the industry's growing pains. There are literally kinda similar cases in the past, like skepticism around 3D graphics or multiplayer.

Interesting, render image by Daz and upscale by AI?
