I'll agree with killdream on the main character having a personality. Yeah, you control what choices the character makes, but when you make a choice that the character's not thilled with, the character responds with *I don't like doing this, BUT...." or if you make a choice that fits with the personality of the character, the response shows that too.
Having a main character with personality will be harder than having a MC without one - but generally speaking, you will get more people interested in the VN if the main character has a personality, because they feel more involved. One reason why Final Fantasy VI did soooooooo well is all the characters had definitely personalities...it must have been VERY hard to implement, but no one can argue with the results...by giving everyone of the main characters of FF VI a personality, the players felt so much more involved. *Gets off his FF VI soapbox*
100 MB is still pretty huge for a dialup connection...doable, certainly, but will take quite awhile
