Choice for beta testing

#1 Post by Voight-Kampff »

So, something I've been wondering about...

If one were working on a Ren'Py game and wanted to beta test it, where would the better place to do that be? Lemmasoft, or 4chan?

I'll be honest - I've never used 4chan. All I've heard are the equivalent of myths and rumors. And my impression based on those is...not so good. I'm wondering if others might be able to fill in the gaps with their experiences.

If you want generally constructive criticism, I'd go with here. If you want... something else, go there :P

I agree on here....we generally do a good job with beta testing and offering *pros and cons* - heck I've beta tested a few games here with pros and cons, and what I felt worked, and what needed work...I have no idea on 4chan, but from what I've heard....if you want betatesters, that's NOT were to go for them!

Almost any site on the internet is better than 4chan for this. YouTube is better. Mongolian knitting forums are better. Not posting it in the internet at all is better. If you post on 4chan, you will not only be mocked, but mocking you might turn into a meme. This will happen regardless of the quality of your work.

The Lemma Soft forums aren't perfect, but they can't hurt. In the worst case, you'll also have to post in other places in addition to here. (But not 4chan, nor YouTube. You might want to try a Mongolian knitting forum.)

No one says you can't use both, but I would suggest LemmaSoft, as it seems to have more people interested in the quality and success of your visual novel.

Developers will offer you concrete, useful advice you can use sometimes.

There are only two places where I got beta-testers for Winter Shard, and most of the reliable beta-testers were from lsf. Unfortunately, the list consists of veterans who haven't been visting this forum since.

Go to 4chan only if you need audiences for a completed game, not beta-testing candidates.

If anything, to find a group of reliable beta-testers, make sure you state what genre it is supposed to be. If it is a genre they enjoy, that will keep them interested to commit for a longer time span. And use it to locate possible places to search for beta-testers(If it is a horror genre, going to a occult forum is not totally off the mark).

Wait...wait...

I think I'm picking up on a common theme in everyone's responses.
If you post on 4chan, you will not only be mocked, but mocking you might turn into a meme. This will happen regardless of the quality of your work.
Heh heh. Well, I'm used to criticism and derision from hard-core otaku. But yeah...no need to seek it out purposefully. It'll all come naturally as a matter of course. ;)

That's true.
You might want to try a Mongolian knitting forum.
I - I searched but couldn't find it. Don't tell me, though! I'll find it eventually.

Oooo! Mongolian wool hat knitting patterns...

Anyone have any links to Mongolian wool-knitting forums? :P

Where do the Klik&Play, GameSetWatch, and Ludum Dare people hang out?

Oh, and some of the regulars on Play This Thing! might be willing to help, although that site is better for promoting finished games.
She's sun and rain: She's fire and ice. A little crazy, but it's nice.
Bliss Stage: Love is your weapon! A sci-fi visual novel about child soldiers coming of age. Kickstarter prerelease here. WIP thread here. Original tabletop game by Ben Lehman here. Tumblr here.
