What would you like to see in anime?

#1 Post by lepapillonrouge »

I was reading the Anime is Dying topic and I was about to answer it, but I had a lot of disjointed ideas while writing it, when this question popped in my head.

I mean, most things that have a story on television don't really have that opportunity to have original writing, so a lot of it relies on clichés and all, but we can still dream, right? Maybe one day the idea might help someone else, I guess.

And it doesn't have to be just anime, I'll open the floor for video games and any other Japanese story-telling medium. I just couldn't fit a decent name. (I think there's a topic like this about just Visual Novels somewhere else though XD?)

• I want to see if they can make an anime with a mother as the main character. Seriously. And if there is one, please tell me! I'll forgive them for being moeblobs. (No offense to people who like them). I know that anime mostly caters to a younger generation, but it's possible to write a good story with a parent, I think.
• An otome game that doesn't have too much of an abundance of guys. There probably are otome games that have only one or two guys as a choice, right? (Unfortunately, that makes me a hypocrite, considering my game has three...?) And, well, I'd like it to appeal to guys too. Somehow. One day.
• And on that, an otome game that breaks stereotypes! That'll be fun. Or at the very least, appears to break stereotypes. Because they really stick with them more than BxG vns, in my personal opinion. And a complex storyline.
• I want to see more complex storylines in general! Haha.

And I guess as a joke...
• More megane characters -shot-
• And more OPs done by Kalafina -shot-

I guess this can be a wishlist/general suggestions/discussion kind of deal...

Perhaps more variety and originality? And if the anime is taken from manga, perhaps they could make it to stay true to the manga and less fillers. And don't depend on boobs/panty to boost rating, it makes me sick (not that I mind).

More well-developed, mature themed anime, less school-themed works. Less stupidity, more originality. More experimental works, more invention. Anime is beauty - I hate when they cut on production costs in area of background art, characters and animation; this denies the true reason of anime's existence.

Also, I'd like more cleverly writed stories, possibly with somekind of a twist because they always tend to immerse you a lot better than standard paced productions. In overall, there should be more originality in storywriting and ideas. Anime seriously lacks that nowadays.

I want to see more emotional "make you cry cause you bonded with the characters" anime.

I want moe without fanservice. Done right. Less gainaxing, it's really annoying.

I want 4-koma that aren't completely retarded but can give a laugh.

I disagree with Jake, I enjoy FLCL though, I found lucky star very relatable in reality, kanon was good but was better as a VN.

I want more magical girls like CardCaptor Sakura.

I want Clamp stories that make snese.

I too want more Meganekko.

I want more anime with bittersweet endings. Clannad was good but the ending could have been better (although it was a bit like that in the game.)

I don't mind school themed, but let them go beyond. Start in school and let it go forward.

More Riya and Lia OPs that can carry feelings (coughtokiwokizamuutacough)

I don't mind anime that even stick to the normal formula. BUt mix it up, we don't want clones, we want entertainment.

I want more stuff like Chobits, I don't like fanservice but story made me forget that entirely and just pay attention to the story.

And once again to reinforce it. Moe isn't evil, I love moe. But do it right, you don't need piles of fanservice and moe. Moe isn't about looks (most of the time) it's about personality quirks.

You don't need fanservice at all.

I also want more GOOD tsundere, less bad ones. They're diluting the great Tsundere name with a bunch of lame girls. Type 2 tsundere are under appreciated.

And in the moe related field... I want another rank for Zettai Ryouiki A+ for the girls who have pigtails or a tsundere attitude, but not both.

Since I could summarise my statements as "I want to see more novel, interesting, thought-provoking and stylistically-varied stuff instead of all this insipid wide-eyed pandering moe padding", the second statement above is kind of redundant. :3

(I'll happily admit that I stopped watching all of the things on the right before the end, so maybe I missed some hidden quality. But then, if they took until the end to do anything interesting they fail as entertainment. It seems to me that moe series are predominantly there to give people something to watch that doesn't threaten them by challenging any of their preconceptions, it's nearly all "comfort-zone" anime... which personally, I find dull. Each to his own - maybe some people prefer to just relax in front of something they don't have to pay attention to.)

How about an anime with high school girls playing high end PC games and being elitist about it?

Well almost all the anime you listed do take a while to get going, Nanoha's best parts are later in the series, lucky star is slow throughout but with a reason, it's meant to be relaxing, I haven't watched mych shugo chara but I find it good so far. And Kanon is admittedly slow. I felt kyoani did better than anyone with Key's games. CLANNAD was god.

Also, Moe's character flaw points can lend a bit of realism to the characters. (But i'm not talking exploding pots, super dangerous clumsy girls or stuff like that, I mean glasses, being frail and sickly, that stuff.)

And like I said, I want good moe, stuff that lends itself to a good story. Chobits was a great example, and surprisingly I found Chu-Bra!! Very entertaining. (Gotta say it was original.)

But I admit we need some good stories in anime. I tend to watch all original anime like gurren lagann and anime based off of good VNs because they won't end up with filler and I avoid anime off of manga because they definitely will.

We need more anime firsts. Gurren Lagann was amazing (episode two... Not so much)

But what we don't need is contriversial anime like Evangelion, it's a good anime but people take it a bit too far.

AND WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE NARUTO OR THE LIKE. EVER.

Edit: We also need more anime that are like the Visual Novel "Saya no Uta." Bring on some more lovecraftian stuff people.

Not much. It depends wherever the anime series exploits moe as an additional theme to add a little extra bit cuteness to characters that's good, either way when there is an reasonable explanation. Clumsy girls with glasses and maid uniforms (-10 points down for expected kinds of hairdo and -50 for using guns throughout show) which are moesome because... they are, aren't those kinds of characters I'm talking about.
linkdragon0 wrote:...And like I said, I want good moe, stuff that lends itself to a good story. Chobits was a great example, and surprisingly I found Chu-Bra!! Very entertaining.
Chobits isn't moe, at all. Some glimpses can be found here and there, but it's characters doesn't contain moe traits at all. Chobits falls rather into ecchi category :) Characters are rather simple, practical with realistic life standards. For me personally Chobits is Clamp's best manga adaptation.

Yeah, Gurren Laggan had a great story which began with an unexpected twist and evolved into something great, even if is a little unserious. Despite that, how simple was it's main theme...
linkdragon0 wrote:But what we don't need is contriversial anime like Evangelion, it's a good anime but people take it a bit too far.
Don't mess total harcore fans into anime developement. They tend to overdo their adoration to such extreme levels, it becomes unstable to anyone. Evangelion was a great series and we need exactly such stuff nowadays. It was wonderfully done. It was deepressing and left much to think about.... As Jake said earlier, we need some more anime which involves thinking while watching, not just stuff we can only sit back and relax with no disturbing thoughts about it.
linkdragon0 wrote:AND WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE NARUTO OR THE LIKE. EVER.
Agree :) They only wasting so much money into it, otherwise could be used for something much better. But cash is cash :(
linkdragon0 wrote:We also need more anime that are like the Visual Novel "Saya no Uta." Bring on some more lovecraftian stuff people.
They could make an adaptation... Other than that, I totally agree with you. Such stuff is great, although it's also an breeding ground for kitsch if used inproperly.

I tend to overlook moe that relies on looks. Like I said, I like the sick girls, slightly clumsy girls, the dere types... Stuff like that.

Also Chobits has more moe than you think, like I said, moe isn't just looks. You can find quite a few moe points in chii.

Also I never said I didn't like Eva. It was awesome, left a lot of stuff to think about, looked great, it's just a lot of people hate it to an extreme and a lot of people love it to an extreme. Which isn't good but it can't be avoided.

I guess what I was trying to say is that we need the normal stuff, but better, higher story quality and all that.

When it comes to manga I want to see shoujo stories with shounen art, oh wait that's seinen. But why isn't seinen good a lot of the time? Because it isn't quite the shoujo stories. So I want a good romance fnatasy with good art.

I would really love a bleached underpants version of Saya no Uta. Keep the violence, toss the squicky H parts that were in the game.

I'd actually like to see an anime that is fantastic in nature yet the protagonist is somewhat bound by laws of realism (bending is permitted but not blantant ignoring), in that he/she must be creative not forceful in solving conflicts; the MC cannot have super powers of their own and must basically rely on wit/creativity to turn the tables of any conflict. Is there an anime like this? I feel there is but I haven't found it. >8

As for production values, it really depends on the company and the funding.

Also seconding the motion for a Saya no Uta that gets rid of the porny bits and keeps the horror.

Lucky Star is my favorite manga and anime. It also uses lots of comedy taken from real life, perhaps that's why everybody could like it.

I agree I want to see less bad tsudnere's. By this I mean these over violent girls who honestly I wonder how the main character even likes them. Or if they are going to do this, do it in a fashion that makes sense. Where they either eventually start realizing this girl is doing nothing but causing harm and keeping them in a highly abusive relationship. Or have them start liking her then moving onto a more reasonable character.

I think I want to see more Anime's that follow things like the Ef series. I thought the characters had a nice balance between moe and having real faults. At least it seemed that way to me.

I also agree stick more towards the original source. Especially Manga. I can understand VN's being quite different from their anime. Though Manga, I don't see why you change the story so much from them.

Also I am probably horribly biased, though I want to see more Yandere. More horror and mystery stories.

I found that I identified with Konata a lot.

Yandere scare me. But I guess that's the point.

I love type 2 tsundere because they're more real. My girlfriend is a type 2.

I don't see how VNs are different from anime... Or at least too much. Most of the time anime based off of VNs are really good.

Well I've pretty much run out of things to say on this subject.

I want an anime about cooking just because food is awesome. I mean, there was Kitchen Princess, but that's a manga not an anime, so =A= And there's Yumeiro Patissiere, but that hasn't really caught my eye since it's about pastries.
