Huh. Learn something new every day. At least it's not my birthday anymore. :-)

I wonder how much of this, then, is due to the western otaku market having been historically male. Many older fans, and the heads of many of the companies and distributors involves are all male - and so you might have some bias there.

Or maybe not.

Regarding age, since you're just speculating, here's a very small sample I ran on my site:

I would assume you agree 16+ typically has disposable income? And just from a donations point of view, I received a lot of money (I won't divulge how much, but in the hundreds -- rest assured it was poured right into my artists' pockets) for a free game. Combine with Jack Norton venturing into otome because he knows it sells -- Guessing how many girls play games is really all just guess work. Though I agree with the computer science classrooms being 100% male. You get that real quick when you're the only girl. But when it comes to VNs, it's not computer science -- it's not even anime! It's stories! Girls like stories! People like stories! :D

To tell the truth, I don't really understand what the question is asking. Currently at Lemmasoft, I think there are more active projects with female protagonists right now, so it's kind of a self answered question.

If you want to see more of a certain type of game, then the best solution is to just make it yourself. I think that's the reason why we're all here.

I see it more of the phenomena of there are more male professional chef VS lots of house wife who can cook well.

In my animation class, the amount of female is so little I can count with one hand.
In Devianart, the amount of female artists are off the chart. I often wonder where are all the males hiding to.

In conclusion, guys are more likely to pursue it as career, girls more likely doing it for hobby. It also answer why Doujinshi artists are mostly female. This may change in the future, but as of now, I see it that way.

The problem I think that while male oriented games tends to be porn/erotic, female-oriented VN/dating sim aren't. So it's a completely different market. Not casual market, but definitely not male oriented. I think is at least as big as the male one, or perhaps bigger (talking about normal VN/dating sims, for RPG tends to be more 50/50). I can see MANY GxB games coming in the next years, much more than BxG, so don't worry :)

You mean, you see it as the phenomenon where men are praised for pursuing skills that are considered standard and unimportant in women? :)

Yeah, I know, no one wants me to derail into a huge feminism rant, and one of the most important things to understand is that culture is COMPLICATED and you can never point to a single factor and say that it causes everything. But lots of research points to the idea of general gender expectations having a huge impact on career outcomes. Some people are stubborn enough to know what they want and stick to it, others are turned away through being told over and over again that 'girls/boys don't do that' and trying to mentor them later, after they've already decided they don't want to, doesn't help much.

As for game-making in particular, an awful lot of girls have gotten the idea that it's Really Hard and that they can't possibly do it, without even having tried. Of course, I had a comp sci minor and have never applied for an IT job because I'm sure no one would hire me, so I'm just as easily intimidated in my own way, I'm just stubborn enough to run off and do things on my own. :)

Please don't twist my words lol.

I'm female, and I am perfectly happy pursuing art as career. And I respect any female who did the same (like you.)

The thing is, I don't get to do it easy. I was born in traditional Chinese family where female are supposed to have kids and do house works. As much as I hate it, but that's how our family works. It's not like in US where girls can sought to do what they want, far more easier than in East (or Chinese family.)

And since I am talking about this, I might as well extend it to the fact women in Japan also get the same kind of repression from society. That's why men are more prominent in almost every field. Regardless it's doctor, chef, and of course art/manga/games. This does not mean we female appreciate it less. It's just the way the society works.

I see changes lately, due to increasing amount of fujoshi or GxB games, etc. That's why I mentioned that in the future, this is very likely to change. And I welcome the change.

Imma gonna say that it is mostly because the gaming demographic is traditional male dominated (though there has been a slight shift recently) and most of the people making said games are male.

I am hoping games can make a huge advancement soon and acknowledge their female audience more. Not only in things like translating otome vns and such but actually writing decent female characters and having more female protagonists on other platforms. Since females are a smaller demographic at the moment and thus having smaller buying power, I'm not holding my breath, but I can be hopeful. I'm sick of playing games where the female sidekick is a cookie cutter of every other female sidekick. And their personalities! My god.

It's probably because boys are more into games than girls (I think girls prefer handsome idols, stars... *_*) Now we have to wonder why there are more H dating sims than normal ones... @_@
