Ren'Py and HTML 5

#1 Post by Sumoslap » Mon Jun 27, 2011 4:19 pm

I was wondering if, long-term, any plans were in the works to make Ren'Py HTML 5-friendly.

Caveat: I know nothing re: how hard it would be to port Ren'Py to HTML 5, or if HTML 5 can even support all of Ren'Py's functionality. I just discovered today that GameSalad can now yield HTML 5 builds, so I thought to myself, "Man, I'd be cool if Ren'Py could build in HTML 5, too."

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question. I just think that, were it possible, it would greatly expand the audience for Ren'Py-made games.

Right now, I don't know of any way to do this without rewriting Ren'Py from scratch, which I don't think is a good use of my time. Ren'Py is designed to take advantage of the full set of capabilities available to applications, not the limited set that Javascript can make use of. Now, it's possible that some technology will come about that makes it possible to run applications in the browser(Emscripten, Adobe Alchemy, and Google Native Client are three possible technologies.), at which point I'll try to make Ren'Py take advantage of them. But for now, my focus is taking advantage of the PC (and Android) platform.
