Dark or Bright? (Odd title yeah...)

#1 Post by OtomeWeekend » Fri Aug 26, 2011 12:11 am

Always wondered what kind of Vn people prefer. Is it the funny and bright-colored, comedy, brain-cracker one? or the dark, sorta scary atmosphere, dark-colored, kinda mysterious and puzzling one? or doesn't matter?

...and why. *bricked*

Both really. I create and am attracted to the creation of dark stories, but my favourite genre to read is probably non-drama slice-of-life. So either is fine as long as it is well written.

I used to enjoy dark stories more, but media has begun a disturbing trend of making everything dark without giving a actually reason for it; basically, making something dark simply for the sake of dark. At this point, I want more bright and cheerful stories just for a freaking change of pace.

Also, Darkness Induced Audience Apathy. Don't even get me started on the Gears of War universe.

Due to the overstauration of slice-of-life stories, I tend to like the darker games more. However I don;t mind if you mix the two together (Utatemeguri is a good example)

Dark. Haven't seen anyone make something like Winter Shard in a long, long time. Most VNs today even adult ones (talking about JVNs) seem to be painted in bright and cheery primary colors and have slice of life stories.

I don't watch horror films so this oversaturation doesn't affect me. They seem to just want to play up reptilian instincts rather than get into the psychology of abject despair and loneliness. I would play horror anime-style VNs though they are rarely made. If you think about it, the popular VNs that people prefer for the plot rather than the eroge, are all dark:

Higurashi
Umineko
Saya no Uta
Fate Stay Night

However, I don't want writers to hover around the same escape-the-room / whodunnit mechanics which the 999 team is accused of being a one-trick pony after the announcement of the sequel.

Oooooo, I do like me a psycological thriller. And a proper one, not just 'this is the bad guy so he is bad'. Something that shows just how close we all stand to being something dark.

I definitely like cutesy happy stuff more.

It may sound twisted but usually typical "dark" stories are just not dark enough for me. I'm never really engaged by most things labeled "dark" because they don't go far enough to actually disturb the reader. If you want to know what's dark enough for me, go read Franken Fran, Tomie and the HP Lovecraft story "The Loved Dead". Especially Tomie.

It's hard to do cute, too, but if it's heartwarming I really love it. :D It just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, y'know? Dark stories can't do that.

I don't mind with any kind, like I always said; I'm an omnivore... but I think I always longing for a heart warming one, with some comedy, echi-ness, and lots of moe-ness ^_^

I really love dark comedies, but I'm also cool with regular ones~ dark ones where everyone just goes around telling you their backstory for no apparent reason kinda annoy me, though. same with light ones too, I guess...? hmm. I suppose twisted stories are what I like best, though :D

This. and the reason why i'm getting gaga over k-horror.

I actually forgot to add mine. I'm fine with both, like how i love to play renai banchou(and their super colorful rainbow outfits,) but still loves plays hiiro no kakera(dark-themed and stuff.)

I wonder, have many of you played other vn games besides otome games? xD It's like they're the only games out there to many people, when there's other genres to be experienced...

And what constitutes as dark? People trying to kill eachother over drama? Kidnapping? What about serial killers, horrific scientific experiments, a character sacrificing themself to a horrible fate for a better cause? Killer Queen, Corpse Party, Saya no Uta, anyone?

Dark comedy. :D

For some reason, I like those stuff more. Dramatic with a touch of humor and light-heartedness~
I never liked something too dramatic or something too light. I can't relate with those -_-

I agree that it has to be really dark for me to consider it dark. I read the Black Jewel Trilogy when I was 12.
A man gets eaten alive by rats in the first couple pages because he fought being a slave. And that is that bad compared to some of the other stuff that goes on in the books.
It's not about it being scary, it's about making you think.

i never really try other games besides otome cause they are the only things I FOUND interesting. it really depends on people, and I really just get sleepy on playing other adv games, wait, i played a few and that very few even pisses me off *looks at 999*

besides i just used them as examples cause they are the very first to come into my mind with the bright and dark images with almost same objective(not really same though more like completely different but still same that you aim the guy you want).
