Soft Landing - shooter/bishoujo hybrid

#1 Post by Nafai » Thu Aug 17, 2006 10:59 pm

Found this (in production) game on Heisei Democracy and did a forum search here and found it wasn't on anybody's radar (unless it had another name before - couldn't find it on mikey's authoritative encyclo either) so thought I'd bring it up:
Soft Landing is a hybrid of a side-scrolling space shoot-em-up and a bishoujoeqsue visual novel. We’re trying to do a lot of different stuff at once. From the very beginning we wanted it to be kind of a cure for all of the downsides to quirky and independent games we’d seen: it needs to be high-quality, cross-platform, and in *English*. Most of all, it needs not to get abandoned.

I think the project has been a therapeutic outlet for both of us. Whenever I run into frustration with anything crappy I can’t control, it just makes me want to put more into SL, something we have complete control over. Likewise, whenever I’m overflowing with admiration for some product, all of that positivity can be poured into SL.

Our product will be a stack of our strongest feelings about *stuff*, wrapped up in the tradition of shmups and galge. It’ll be the game we’ve both always wanted to play, but which never existed. And the bonus is that other people might play and enjoy it, too.
The rest of the interview/article is here:

Looks promising ^_^ And if theyve been working on it since 2004 that speaks of commitment... well, a slow work pace too, but commitment as well most assuredly :P Hope they release that demo soon ^_^

Thanks for the tip, I'll add this and it will be there on the next update.

I actually found the game, but for some unknown reason, I didn't read the article and dismissed it for a Japanese thing.

But my god, that's a long time in dev...

Mmm, not really. I was making steady progress with Elven Relations for 2 years or more, before I decided to indefinitely postpone it.

See also: ToL 2, Metropolitan Blues, ...

It seems there are two types of game that get finished: those that take a month or two (most notably NaNoRenO games and mikey games), and those that take 6months or more. 2 years is quite a long time, but certainly not unheard of.

It's good that the authors spot the overriding concern is that the game not get abandoned!
I released 3 VNs, many moons ago: Elven Relations (IntRenAiMo 2007), When I Rule The World (NaNoRenO 2005), and Cloud Fairy (the Cute Light & Fluffy Project, 2009).
More recently I designed the board game Steam Works (published in 2015), available from a local gaming store near you!
