Showreel for '12, want your input. :p

#1 Post by ZackParrish »

Alright, so, it occurred to me recently that my soundcloud is becoming rather congested with music and lacks any means to organize it all outside of my spotlight tab(main profile link), and I should probably ... organize it on that page to get more variety on the first viewed page in a way to make it easier on the viewer to find tracks, without having to dig through 100 tracks on the tracklist trying to find certain styles.

My need for input, is merely on the order and selection of the tracks I have on the showreel on my page, as... I honestly don't have much of an opinion on how it should be ordered and just kind of tossed everything on there and mixed the styles around so you don't get 5 orchestral songs in a row. I also have 3 game OSTs on my spotlight tab, and my piano album, which are all exluded from the showreel(no point having the same song twice on that page).

Anyway, link for main profile is...

http://soundcloud.com/zack-parrish

And showreel(which is first thing on previous link) can also be found by itself at...

http://soundcloud.com/zack-parrish/sets/showreel-2012/

Another thing to note... in some situations I let the older songs kinda hang to the bottom, since the majority of listeners will only listen to the first few tracks before bailing. Then I changed the track titles(most of them) so they don't have a lot of gibberish on them, although I think I might add a parenthesis to the side of the name with in as best as I can describe... the style of the music in that particular track. So for people that actually decide to jump around looking for a particular genre/style, they won't be doing as much of a hit or miss kind of playthrough.

Also, I mentioned there are 3 OSTs on there, one is hidden currently because I haven't released it to the public yet, so you'll only see 2 + piano album and the showreel.

Track selection was based on favoritings and positive comments from soundcloud users. I set a standard for the lowest those counts could get(either/or, not simultaneous), and picked tracks based off of this info. It seemed that for the show reel to have the most impact, to select the tracks which seem to get the most attention. :p Let dead tracks stay dead.

Yeah, I'm done rambling now, I appreciate any aid in this, and if I find your comments suitable enough I might credit you for your help on the showreel's description, like... "Special thanks to Awesome Guy, Cool Dude, and Joe Bob Mcslobbinknob"

Tootles,
Zack

Not all of it, because there's 100 tracks on there, just the main page... for maximum appeal. :p Only thing I'm really interested in opinions on is the order and selection of the tracks in the Showreel set, because when I link to my soundcloud, that's the first thing people will see. Originally I only had 5 single tracks on that page, but I switched to having 5 sets on it to utilize the space more effectively.

I have nothing to say for the demo reel. Though I think that you should move your Solo Piano Collection to the second spot.

Hey it looks like I forgot to quit that PSN game and turn off my PS3!
Because that's how your music feels like... it belongs in some console game!

I want to so hire you but I feel my game won't do your music justice (I'm only aiming for 32-bit Playstation 1 / Mode 7 presentation). I don't think there are many people here capable of a HD level VN like Dunamis / Stein's Gate etc. The ones that are are off somewhere else and pretty tight-lipped.

I'm starting to be really impressed with modern synth instruments, since even 5 years ago I could still tell whether something were synthesized. Problem is epic music needs epic graphics, and HD-level graphics are really time-consuming to make, so what often happens is you see some iphone like graphics with really bombastic music and it just doesn't fit (It's like inserting Kingdom Hearts music into an RPGMaker game, for example).

edit: Oh, some chiptune-like music samples, nevermind.

Diversity. ;) Guess I should work on the order a bit to make it a more sudden realization that I can branch out to various styles. :p

Kindred - Nice idea on the piano album, makes sense when I think about it... since the OSTs above it are both video game music and nothing in my showreel on the top has anything to do with piano. :p Just originally figured most people really don't care about piano music as much as I'd like them to... so just left it on the bottom to semi-rot.

If they don't like piano music, then they just keep scrolling down.

But it just makes sense that the soundtracks go below, as the songs you compose on your own free will will define you more than what you put together for a game. That's what I believe anyways.

I love your music. Piano, chiptunes, orchestra--keep on keeping on, my friend.
