Animated .gifs

#1 Post by brofisto » Fri Feb 10, 2012 10:46 pm

I definitely think Renpy should try and add support for animated .gifs

...there's not much more I can say, really. It just seems like something that makes sense.
A lot of effects and animations use .gif, so it really opens up a door of opportunity and simplicity.

.gif's are really just a bunch of images that replace each other. The same thing can be done with ATL code, and takes up less space

ATL is a lot more powerful than gif animations are - gifs don't support translucency, rotation, scaling, smooth movement, or having more than 256 colours per frame.

I suspect it would be more worthwhile to write a tool to convert gif animations into ATL than to try to add gif animations to Ren'Py.

I second this. A tool like that makes much more sense, than trying to fully support an obsolete technology.

The problem with that tool is people might use it. That would require first converting an image to gif format - losing things like 24-bit color and 8-bit alpha in the process.

GIF was a great format in 1989 - when half the board wasn't even born. It's long in the tooth today.
