My New Computer
Hey folks, just checking in from "eileen", my new computer. (Named after everyone's favorite Ren'Py spokes-bishoujo.)
Some specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 @ 2.13ghz (2MB Cache)
RAM: 2x512 MB DDR2-800 (Dual Channel, 1GB total RAM)
HDD: 500 GB SATA
VIDEO: nVidia GeForce 6200 (With working OpenGL, finally.)
I've changed the OS to be Ubuntu running in amd64 mode.
I still have lots of things to install, but hopefully the computer will begin working well sometime tonight.

Re: My New Computer
from the sound of that post, it must have taken a bit to get it working. I had to install a whole different OS to get my nVidia GeForce 6600 working right with just about anything involving DirectX (hell, even WMP locked my computer up), and even then, it took a while.PyTom wrote:Hey folks, just checking in from "eileen", my new computer. megaman>>> Actually, getting the 6200 working was quite easy, about a minute or two of work, with the only issue being I had to install the beta drivers to let me specify which head was the primary one in TwinView mode. (It defaulted to CRT-0, the lousy CRT, rather then DFP-0, my nice LCD display.)
The finally refers to the fact that I never had reliable OpenGL with my old Radeon.
monele>>> Okay, I have to admit, I was mostly bragging about my new toy. But there are some advantages... eventually, I'll probably be releasing a 64-bit version of Ren'Py. (When I deem it necessary.)

Actually, I run Windows under VMware. It works quite well for 2-d games, and I can access the Linux computer from inside the Windows VM. (And vice versa, although I rarely do things the other way.)
VMware server is free, and I think it's a must-have for people who are doing cross-platform development.

Well, after A whole YEAR and even more I was suffering from a bad video card, a faulty mainboard (which made the disk switch off sometimes), unable to play any 3D games or applications whatsoever for more than 10 minutes before everything screwed up (it was, again, a HW problem), yesterday, I got myself a new computer!!
Now, finally, I can take out the Need For Speed, Race Driver and a few newer racing game releases I have bought and could never play... And as a small distraction, Tomb Raider Legend, which I have bought in London, and could not play for almost a year... so it's fair to say I will be a useless LSF member for the next month or so. But I deserve it! For so long I have endured the whims of my old computer (Mayako), I need to race, race, race and race some more.
Anyhow, my new computer, a mid-range thing (from the specs, it's not as powerful as "eileen"), but works with all the said games perfectly. For the first time in my life I think, my copmuter ISN'T called a Japanese/Anime name, instead I took its retail name Scaleo and derived its new name from it - and it's called Scaglietti now!
Aaaah, the joys.
