Re: Playing video on 6.14

#16 Post by Kuroneko_rg » Wed Aug 01, 2012 6:19 pm

I borrowed a laptop today. It has a Intel chipset: Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express.
Made some tests of video playback on it.

On the first run the video hanged up a little. The image didn't show up at the begining but did so 5 or 6 seconds later.
Switched to software renderer. The video played smoothly to the end.
Switched to directx renderer. The video played smoothly to the end.
Switched back to OpenGL. The video hanged at the begining for 5-6 seconds.

Not sure if it helps or not :3

Can I ask people - especially people who had problems with the previous vidtest - to download and run this new vidtest2 game? The three-platform vidtest2 game can be downloaded from:

http://www.renpy.org/tmp/vidtest2-1.0-all.zip

It includes the Homeward OP, the shuttle OGV, and a sound test movie made by the BBC. To use the last one, listen for the sound, and make a note of where the indicator at the bottom is where the sound starts.

Everything works perfectly with the new test! I can see the entirety of the Homeward OP without any lagging, and the indicator lands right where it's supposed to. :)

Everything's all good here. Third video test shows the proper result. But I never had any problems to begin with.

Just tried it on the same computer I described earlier. The video keeps failing, but this time it never started at all.
The sound hanged up, and the image didn't show up.

It still works perfectly when switching to directx renderer :? .
Any idea why that happens?

It worked fine on my first laptop, but on my older one, the video lagged or snagged like crazy. I think this might be worth calling an achievement. I think it may just be because the laptop is so terrible though. It can't play most video files without lag anyway. I noticed that the CPU usage was maxed the entire time that I was trying to play the videos, so that could be its problem. It's got an AMD Athlon TF-20 processor with 1.6 GHz of RAM, so it's not terribly good (understatement).

Everything seemed to work perfectly with my new laptop though.

NOTE: if you've got questions about vnovel or things like that, it's Leon that you should be contacting. Leon's been pretty much handling everything, but due to various reasons, I've had to withdraw entirely.

Everyone, hold off on testing 6.14 for a moment. I'm seeing a "performance cliff" on some older intel CPUs, like the Atom, that is really hurting things. I'll be attempting to fix this tonight. (Interestingly, I was able to play the Homeward OP in software mode on the same Atom.)

CPU usage is going to be maxed during video playback, since we busy-wait for the next frame to show up. That's not a problem in itself - it's things like frame dropping that matters.

Includes an updated Ren'Py. This new version is capable of playing back the Homeward opening on my Atom netbook - so hopefully people with low-end machines will be happier with this version.

* Movies do not stop on window resize. (They stop on fullscreen on the software renderer, but not opengl.)
...the movie still seems to stop when I resize the window...

But aside from that, everything's fine here.

It plays fine for me in general.

Force DirectX: It asks me to update Direct X. When I press update, it just brings up a command prompt and nothing happens.
Force OpenGL: Plays all videos fine.
Force Software: Only on the Shuttle video and the BBC audio test, it takes a second or two to begin playing the video (Sounds plays right away though). (Note: 25% CPU Usage...not too bad)

System Specifications:
Windows 7 x64
Intel 2500K (OC'd to 4.3 Ghz)
16GB (1600 Mhz) DRR3 RAM
AMD/ATi FirePro V7900 (2 GB GDDR5) (It worked on my old Radeon HD 4850 (1 GB GDDR3) with the same results as above)
HT Omega Claro Plus Soundcard

It worked with both computers for me! I was pumping my fists

Both the original and the updated version of the test work fine on my system. Though the first version of the test did take abnormally long to open compared to the updated test - however it ran without lag once it finally started.

Win 7 64-bit
Intel i7 Quad Core CPU 2.7 ghz
Nvidia GTX 260 GPU
12 GB RAM
(It's an Nvidia chipset motherboard, if that matters.)

OpenGL (default):
  • Homeward OP: displays one frame, audio keeps playing but starts stuttering horribly after 15-20 seconds.
  • Shuttle Launch: Perfect
  • BBC Audio Test: Black screen
DirectX: Perfect
Software: Perfect

Pentium SU4100 (1.3GHz dual core), 2GB RAM, Intel GMA 4500MHD.

What texture format are you using to upload to the GPU? Intel's driver is rather stupid and the OpenGL < 1.2 standard GL_BGRA/GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE triggers some type of slow path. The only fast BGRA format appears to be GL_BGRA/GL_UNSIGNED_INT_8_8_8_8_REV (http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/ ... hp?t=76303).

AxemRed:

I'm using GL_RGBA / GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE.

Does a driver upgrade fix things? It seems to me that a ~300ms texture upload time is really broken, and hence probably not a problem on my end.

Also, do you have the log.txt from that computer?

EDIT: I've moved from denial to acceptance.

It was broken for two years, but upgrading to the latest driver does finally fix the problem. Unfortunately, it refuses to update normally. I had to manually download the newest driver from Intel (auto detection complains about having a "manufacturer customized" driver -- the latest version of the manufacturer's driver is still broken). The downloaded one refused to run until I uninstalled my current graphics driver and rebooted.

I guess they finally did fix it, now if only the upgrade process wasn't like being punched in the face repeatedly...
