Exposure makes a huge difference. While I prefer not to talk figures... little bitty trickle of hobby money from just putting the games out there and letting them sell themselves. Slightly respectable hobby money from yelling at every site I could possibly get coverage on to publish 'reviews' and 'press releases' (still fairly small sites, because I was a nobody). Whoa I'm In A New Tax Bracket Now money from getting picked up for distribution by some gaming portals. :)

I'm sure going commercial gives you more incentive to keep moving. Even though we're still working on our first project, I don't see my group going commercial. For one, I'd like to say that we're doing this for fun: To tell a story, or display our art/writing/etc skills in a new form.
