I look to artists I like a lot, rather than going through the trouble of stylizing clothing myself. Basically, ask yourself: 'What type of clothing would this character wear, and which other works of fiction have characters with that style/lack of style.', look through the official art and do studies, then apply what you've learned to your own drawings.
You still need to have solid general fundamentals and at least a rudimentary understanding of human proportion and anatomy to make any kind of clothing work for you, though.
