Detective Butler EP1 Demo

#1 Post by Kinjo » Sun Sep 16, 2012 4:58 pm

Completed Game: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 11&t=22722

This is the "true demo" as it shows off more chapters than the previous one, and should resemble the same parts of the final product.
Also, this demo now features new graphics. Sprites by Shadilyn, CGs by Card-Queen.

From time to time I might reupload different versions with fixed bugs/glitches (I can never seem to get rid of them all) but the story will remain the same.

Ok, out of pure curiosity I decided to download this demo. I don't know any other reason why, since I don't like downloading demos for unfinished games due to worry that I will love it but never get the final version. I have been playing it for... about 20 minutes and... You know, I am actually enjoying this more than I thought I would.

Since I HAVEN'T finished it yet, here's some initial feedback:

Negative:
1) This demo may be too long. I always feel a demo should only give a taste of a game, and since you say this is HALF the game... that may be too much. If it was the same length but the full game was 4-5 times longer, than I would have no feedback here.
2) The main menu/title page is... awkward to look at I guess? It doesn't fit the rest of the game properly, to me.
3) The long pause between clicking New Game and the game actually starting... Not my cup of tea. A short animation is ok, but it was between 40-50 seconds for the game to actually start, and during the black screen I thought it froze. This is all personal taste, but I find any wait looking at a black screen longer than a couple seconds just a bit much.

Positive:
1) The music is very nice to listen to. It was the first thing I noticed and I just LOVED it for some reason. I actually stopped playing for a minute to listen to the first track of the game itself.
2) I can tell the art is heavily inspired by the work of 07th Expansion games, but at the same time it looks much nicer. I often joke about how I would use the graphics patches for Umineko and Higurashi, but I actually like the art in them. This is like... Umineko upgraded. I like it!
3) 3 versions of a text box automatically makes me happy. I don't know why, but I ADORE that.

That's it so far. Once I can play the demo through completion I'll give you more detailed feedback. I think it may be more positive than negative.

It's good to see that most of your negative comments were about the title screen, as I figured I'd have to clean it up anyway. I don't really like the way it looks right now, but I'm not delaying the demo even longer for something like that. And as far as game length goes, this may actually be too long to call it a demo. I don't think it can really be helped, though, considering the overall length of the story.

Glad you like the graphics and music (very Umineko-inspired)! The textbox idea was just on a whim, so I'm glad you liked that too.

EDIT: As for the black screens, a patch has been uploaded to make transitions significantly faster. It will erase save data, I think.

Hmm, trying to figure out how to do this on a mac. It doesn't seem possible for me to unpack the nscript file on my system. Could you maybe upload a zip file that has the nsa files in it unpackaged?

Technically, if it's having trouble with the nscript.dat, changing arc.nsa shouldn't have any effect on it. They're independent of each other.

Can you try replacing the onscripter.exe with a mac-compatible one (one of these?)

http://unclemion.com/onscripter/pub/ons ... 110628.dmg
http://unclemion.com/onscripter/pub/ons ... 110413.dmg
http://dev.haeleth.net/onscripter/onscr ... 080823.dmg
http://roto1.net/onscripter/

(this also might be of interest)

I don't have a mac to test this on, and I know that the latest versions of onscripter can make the graphics of my game kind of messy. So if these links don't work, or make it ugly to read, I'll try uploading the game files unpackaged. But I'd like to see if this works first.

Edit: Actually, even if you could get it to work with messy graphics, I think I know how to fix it (including for the latest windows release of onscripter)

Ooh, I totally had a major blonde moment and only downloaded the update patch, which was only an nscript.dat file. I didn't download the larger package which actually had all the other files in it. I should be able to compile a launchable file with all the resources. It's basically the same way I had to set up Umineko before the Witch Hunt made mac launchers.

Got it up and running. Will give it a playthrough and let you know what I think. =D

1. So, I dunno if this is because I am on a mac or what, but when I press new game, I am stuck on the image of the ship sloooooooooowly inching its way off the screen. The music has looped a number of times as I wait for this to go by.

2. I seriously waited fifteen minutes for that ship to move off the screen... And when it finally went off screen, nothing happened for another five minutes.

3. I decided to try and use the old nscript.dat file from the original download. That one was only marginally faster than the updated version, so no dice there.

I finally gave up after half an hour of trying to start the game. The app was eating up 98% of my CPU usage and I just wasn't getting anywhere. I suppose I will just have to wait to see if a future change makes this possible on a mac, and if that never happens, I guess I miss out.

Hmm, well I hate to alienate anyone from reading the story, but at the moment I don't know what else I can do.

I'll do my best to figure out how to get ONscripter to run on macs, hopefully it doesn't take too long.

Sorry about the wait.

I've added a link to what should be a Mac-compatible version.

Ah, sorry about that. The game's been under heavy rewriting the past several months, so putting up the old demo wouldn't be quite right.

I do fully intend to get the completed game out within the next month, so do look forward to that!
