The Loop [Thriller/Puzzle] (To be released 28/12/12!!!)

#1 Post by Greeny » Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:48 am

What if the last few hours you experienced... You have been unwittingly experiencing over and over for an eternity?

A lonely writer finds himself in just such a situation, stuck forever in an endless loop of the same mundane events at the hands of a mysterious ghastly clown figure. But not everything is as it seems... There are clues, riddles scattered around the false world of this insane dream, and it's up to you to guide the protagonist into solving the puzzles laid out before him and escape from the loop.

That is...

Assuming you yourself don't go mad...

Image

The Loop is a gameplay driven Visual Novel; you will have free roam of the different dream worlds as you try to solve puzzles and riddles... And avoid traps!
Features include:
- Hours of gameplay! Unless you cheat. Or are really smart.
- Choices! Menus! Decisions!
- Puzzles that are too hard for your mum!
- Difficutly settings! Don't bother, you can't beat hard mode!
- Seriously, you can't! It's insane! (Actually, "insane" is the normal setting)
- Trophies! Easter eggs! Cheat codes!
- A scary clown! He is not romanceable!
- Violence! Gore! Blood!

All this for the insanely generous price of... nothing! The Loop will be released as donationware, meaning you get to play the game, and then if you, for mysteriously unknown reasons, feel compelled to give me all of your money, I will gladly accept your worldly riches.

Image

Release is just around the corner! Just a few more bugs to be squashed and we're good to go!

Image

The Loop won't be going into open beta, but I am very much in need of testers and proofreaders. If you are interested in becoming either of these two, feel free to volunteer and (assuming your street cred checks out) I will send you the latest working build. Interested? Send me a pm!

Warning: Not suitable for little children, scaredycats or coulrophobics. Includes violence and some gore.

What sort of puzzles and riddles can we expect? Will they have more than one solution?

Can players save/load in the middle of a puzzle, or will this not be allowed?

Ermagehrd it's a clown orz why? whyohwhy?
By puzzles do you mean like logical ones where you have to find clues, riddle-like ones or a puzzle in general such as trying to find clues to piece together why you're here etc?
Anyway, I'll keep an eye on this :)

Saving will always be allowed. Scrollback, however, is disabled; Remembering vital information, after all, is part of some of the puzzles.
There's all kinds of puzzles; it's not really limited to any one kind. A different difficulty setting will even change which puzzles you get in some cases. Most of them have only one solution, but there's no inventory system; you won't be fiddling with odd combinations of items or anything like that.

Certainly sounds very intriguing! I will be keeping an eye on this project, even though clowns are scaryyy. But I like the idea, and the screenshots look great! The best of luck and I'm looking forward to more updates and the release itself!

Heck, it sounds awesome. Puzzle thrillers rank up in my favorite genres of all time, and yours looks fantastic.
It's too bad the clown isn't chaseable /bricked but it seems like the kind you find in many point and click games. For example, Stray Souls: Dollhouse. That one also had a clown in it.
If the puzzles are as good as you say, I'm definitely in. Looking forward to this.

As soon as I get beta testers on board, I'll be able to report an estimate on actual gameplay length.
For me personally, it's literally impossible to make an estimate, seeing as I know all the answers and skip all the text.

For the interested, some data from the lint report informed me of these figures:
~19, 000 words
3000 screens of text
192 menus

Neat! I tend to like loop stories.

(Except maybe Source Code).

I'm not too good in handling disturbing imagery + atmosphere, but I'm still curious to see where this one leads.

That is one creepy clown.... I'm going to have to keep an eye on this. Nothing beats a good puzzle plus it looks perfect to play at about two in the morning instead of being productive or sleeping.

When you say scaredycats...Is it full-on horror movie gore?D: Is so I might now be able to stomach it.

Don't worry, the blood/gore is pretty mild, especially by horror standards these days, but I'm obliged to mention it.

And please do play it at two in the morning, with the lights off and the curtains closed. Please.

This reminds me of Higurashi, only you get to play that experience. Plus, I love puzzles.

In short, this sounds awesome.

On the one hand I NEED TO PLAY THIS.

On the other hand I HATE CLOWNS NO.

I am highly conflicted.

Don't worry. You have my word that you will only suffer from nightmares the first few weeks, tops.
