As for replayability, what if you had the main character solve the mystery with a different person or at a different location? That might spice it up a bit. That way people could go for different people or places, instead of just trying to find the criminal.

I like your art style too. It has a wonderful raw look about it that I admire.

It also has the great advantage of very small file sizes. The minute you smooth those edges and add subtle shading you'll find file sizes will skyrocket. Being able to resist the temptation to shade everything is something I find very hard to do, personally. I know I could work much, much faster if I could resist it... and I hate that I can't. I'm a compulsive fiddler. [groan]

If you use animated image formats (I don't know if renpy allows use of anim-gifs or mng) then unshaded images are even more efficient because of the way those formats store difference between successive images.
My current, and first, RenPy story: A Loving Soul
script: 100% -- scenes: 100% -- character art: 20% -- programming: 20%
(spoilers in the story of the same name on my website)

A life! Cool! Where can I download one of those from?

UPDATE TIME!
Well, things are going along at a reasonable pace...
I'm not going to be a perfectionist on this one because my next ideas are even better and I can't wait to bust 'em out >: )
Aaaanyway....
So there is now an "extra story" for every character, which should hopefully add to the game's replayability, as you try to find them. Each extra story is a different format, i.e. one is ren'ai-style, one will probably be a quiz-type-thing, and others will be minigames.
Unfortunately.....
PyGame is insanely hard to learn and though I am fiercely independent when it comes to collaboration, I might have to give in and ask someone to program the minigames for me. But I haven't even started on the graphics for those yet, just the general concepts, so that's far in the future right now.
All in all, I'm enjoying this one. I'm leaving the basic gameplay as-is for now....I really jumped into this with no clue how to write a mystery game, and realized about 10% into the game that the programming was killing me. But now it's a lot better. I just wish that I could pick up PyGame like I picked up Ren'Py. >_<;;;;;

I'll point out that you can't really insert pygame code into a Ren'Py game, if that's what you're trying to do. Ren'Py has a minigame interface, which uses pygame to some extent, but is largely its own thing.

Okay, so I am at the 80% mark for TMT. I finally got a blog site (which I will probably not write on.... -_-;;; ) but it has a page on it called "Reccasoft" which will have news about upcoming projects.
