I'll volunteer to do proofreading (of scripts) if anyone would like that. I'm involved with that for some NaNoRenO VN's already but I could probably do it for two more if anyone is interested.

How do you make your games? I see. Thank you for the prompt replies, but it is my considered opinion that you're doing it wrong inefficiently because I am a perfushenal professional. Do it my way this way and we can all ascend VN Nirvana together while allowing me to stroke my ego you will improve much faster. Also, please don't forget to thank me for this constructive critique or I will cry and bore you to death respond appropriately with a tl;dr rant discourse of epic adequately lengthy proportions. - Sarcasm Veiled in Euphemism: Secrets of Forum Civility by lordcloudx (Coming soon to an online ebook near you.)

Very nice.

Maybe.... someone can explain this to me... What's the deal with the middle of the mouth missing on anime characters? I've noticed it in several places, but I've never really understood what it was. Is it just a style issue?

The short answer is 'yes'. ;-)

As I understand it, the reason is simply because the recognisable 'manga style' relies heavily on projection and reader-interpolation of the minimalist style to construct more-human characters than one might expect us to ever manage with Marvel's over-muscled freaks; often extra detail is a liability, but just as often (and I think this is the case here) it's just that less lines makes something look more elegant, and because the brain is already filling so much of the image in mentally it doesn't in any way detract from the image to leave the gap.

You see the corners, you recognise it's a face, so your brain mentally fills in the mouth shape. Because you've filled in the mouth shape, you presume that it must be a delicate mouth because otherwise the shadow (the lines on the image) would be more pronounced. If the same mouth was used with a more heavily-lined style, such as that western comics artists tend to use, you would assume that there wasn't an actual mouth there at all because your brain compares it to all the other facial features with their well-defined boundaries and decides that if there was a hole, there'd be a line all the way around, so there isn't a hole.

In the same way, you have mouthes drawn with only the two corners and the bottom curve of the bottom lip. As long as you have enough information, the brain fills the rest. I like brains.

I risk flogging by mentioning this...

but I like ecchi images where just the outline of the breasts or crotch is visible. When they're outright drawn it looks adolescent.

In other words, don't draw the nipples... little bump of the pencil is enough.

Same principle applies.

Quote from my "How to draw manga" collection:
Line break: You may have noticed but normally on certain parts such as mouths and noses the line seems to break away... this technique is called Line break and it's use to avoid the the strain of massive lines, giving the draing a more smooth aspect and less solid/robust feeling we get from drawings
Ok this is what I recall from head (too lazy to pick up the file and search where it's written lol :P) but it's pretty much what DaFool and Monele stated: it's both for style but also for brain interpretation, resulting in much less work and better drawn results.

I think I understand the style reasons, but as far as being less work, I don't get it. I mean, how much work is it to connect two line segments with a single curve?

Frankly, though, in terms of things like getting the mouth right I find it's usually more work to use less lines effectively. With lots of lines, you can afford to be a little out and it just looks a little off; with few lines a little out equals 'seriously odd-looking'.

About an hour before nanoreno starts in my time zone, drumming my fingers on the keyboard in anticipation, going over my outline, I figured I could at least get this part out of the way... Best to try and deal with my biggest hurdle now...

Are there any artists out there willing to work on a nanoreno project? Sorting out the "requirements" in my head, I only need a few poses for 4 (maybe 5) characters, and hopefully 2 or 3 cgs for a few important scenes (if it's not asking for too much). I probably just use photos for the backgrounds, so no need for any work there. I'm kinda taking a light-hearted approach to the story, so a simple style to compliment it is welcome (so, I don't need highly detailed masterpieces or anything close to that). So is anyone out there interested? I appreciate any help I can get.

Hmm. I seem to be having trouble with one of my synthesizers. It won't render properly anymore. Unfortunately, it was Renoise, the tracker I use for producing any of my modern-style pieces. So at this point it's either GarageBand or strictly classical-style music.

So if anyone in NaNoRenO wants (Western) classical-style music, I may have a couple tunes for you. If you want something else, you'll have to go to someone else this time. Sorry.
Will you stay here for a while, dear, 'til the radio plays something familiar?

I always inferred that the gap in the lip correlated with that little nib that some people have on their upper lip. I have it, for example.

Even a "few poses" for four characters can be overwhelming. Since I'm doing the whole load for my NanoReno project, except for music, I regret that I cannot help you, Drake.

This time, I decided that I'm doing those facial icons in the corner that I've been so hell-bent on trying to do for a while, and multiple ones for each character and one full-body sprite.

I may swap out the four basic expressions on the body sprite (happy, sad, angry, neutral) for the face, but at least it will save me some time in the future from redrawing the character over and over and over again.

I think i'll donate some textures for everyone to use in thier projects

All of them can be seamlessly tiled... and I am giving them away for free

Use them anyway you want... especially backgrounds, and I hope it will speed up the process (see attached picture)

I will upload something better once I managed to find them in my jungle of unsorted, unclassified files

I go now...

Goes back to work... sorting his recovered data and NaNoRenO Entry...
