Trying to draw anime style, critiques please
My style isn't usually traditional anime, but I've been working on making more anime looking sprites. Something still looks off on my characters though and I can't figure it out. Any help/critiques/tips would be greatly appreciated

Re: Trying to draw anime style, critiques please
The first thing that jumps out to me about that head shot, is that the jaw is too wide on the left side of the face, but also, the way that the breasts are , sorta cupped by the fabric? I don't really know how to explain it, but IMO it doesn't look good. Also the top isn't on quite right.
But, while it isn't the more known big eyes manga style, it still looks rather good.

I think she looks too stiff, like a barbie doll S:
Also, mind those wrinkles! Clothes don't look that way when worn by people
You should go hunt some references. Seriously.
(There's nothing bad about looking at pictures to make cloths and objects more accurate, quite the contrary! You should *not* trust your imagination until you've drawn something from references *a lot* of times)
Here's my take, hope it helps (:

When drawing something, anything, USE REFERENCES!! Use your Google-fu!
Don't trust your memory, and don't blindly trust what others teach you either.
Research, observation, analysis, experimentation and practice are the key! (:

The wrinkles on the blouse look a lot better now.
But I would use a more visible purple to shade it, and maybe ditch the black line-art. It's rather harsh at the moment. Why not use a dark brown like Deji?

Re: Trying to draw anime style, critiques please
The softer line art and colored shading really helped the girl, but there's still more tweaks to be done!
- The watch should be facing the same direction as the back of the left hand, and the wrist should be wider.
- The blouse looks REALLY loose around the left shoulder - what's keeping it from just falling down??? It should be tight all around the shoulders.
- Not sure if the lines under her left eye are loose strands of hair or shading, but it looks like a scar to me.
- The light source appears to be in the upper left, though I wouldn't know from the shading on the blouse.
The man needs a lot more work, not only in proportions, but in overall polish to match the quality of the girl. The chest and abs are the biggest offenders. Check out Obscura's thread in this forum on drawing shirtless men - there's tons of quality art and pics of yummy shirtless men for references!

Re: Trying to draw anime style, critiques please
Her watch being sideways never occurred to me :/ I'll get the guy reposted when I finish some edits on him, anyone have any tips on scars? I've found several for the smaller scars but nothing really helpful on large ones.
*edit*
This is technically the same guy.... but he went through a complete remake, originally he was going to be more warrior-esque so I hadn't paid that much attention to his anatomy.... went back from the ground up with him and somewhere along the way my plain attempt at an anime man became some type of tribal steampunk.... if thats a thing?

Re: Trying to draw anime style, critiques please
I like his new remake; the colors are very pleasing, and his pose/expression are more interesting than your first attemp. I also like that you drew his hands instead of hiding them. His chest is still a bit wonky, mostly on the left (our left side) it feels like there should be more of an indent where the ribs are. His right (our left) arm feels a tad too short in comparison with his left arm. Nipple placement looks good. I enjoy the dark red tattoo. Is the murky color near the cogs tattoo supposed to be a scar? if so, it doesn't look pronounced/ noticeable, it just vaguely looks like gunk/dirt. An over-all improvement. I especially like his left shoulder. Nice work!

Re: Trying to draw anime style, critiques please
thanks
I know how to make small scars, but I couldn't find any decent references for large ones, any tips? I do small ones same way you paint blood, water, etc but I couldn't decide for a larger one. Short of chasing down someone with a bunch of scars and staring at them I can't figure it out
I'll make the advised edits and repost most likely tomorrow.
