Accidental Demon Slayers [Horror/Comedy] *Updated 1/9*

What is Accidental Demon Slayers?

Well, it's my first attempt at a VN. It's also a 'stock' game. I'm a writer, not an artist, and because it is cheaper to purchase stock art packs, I decided that I would form my story around the stock characters and backgrounds that I was able to find on sites like dlsite.com . That means the game has clean art, but also lacks event CGs.

The only non-stock material I'm using in the game is music. Currently I have fellow forum member ROCKYIII working on some songs for the game. If you need some music, and are will to pay, you really do get your money's worth :)

So, what's it about? *Updated!*

A young man survives a tentacle demon attack in coffee house, and in the process, finds out that he is host to a strong, supernatural force known as Judgement. With no other job prospects on the horizon, he decides to accept his "calling" and get into the demon slaying business. It's a job, right?

Now, only three months in he's finally landed his first big case. Two separate supernatural events have struck his home town.

First, the students at his old high school are acting strange. While many think the sudden aggressive moods are a reaction to the strange death of a fellow student, some think that something supernatural is causing the students to act out violently.

Second, several young women who work for a local youth shelter have gone missing while walking home through a local park. With the shelter being threatened with closure, the man running it calls in our hero to investigate. Are they looking for a human suspect, or is there some demonic force abducting these women?

While investigating our hero learns that everything seems to connect back to one long forgotten memory that may hold not only the answers to the cases, but to how Judgement came to inhabit our hero in the first place.

The game is told through two interconnected storylines. Which storyline you chose, and how the events play out, depends on the choices made by the player. Also, the structure of the game more closely resembles a "Choose Your Own Adventure" style, with certain choices leading to sudden death, while other choices will further the story, and lead to one of three "Good" endings.

The game also uses a "Second Chance" system. If you do die, just click through and the game will take you back before your choice. That means that if you didn't save right before the last choice, you only have to play through a small section of dialogue before being able to rethink your choice.

Rated 17+ *NO NUDITY OR SEX!* (Descriptions of violence and discussion of sexual themes as well as cursing)

Characters

Demon Slayers Inc.

Bobby- Our hero. He's a fairly average guy who, at the start of the game, is just looking for a new direction in life, and most importantly, a new job. He learns, after ingesting demon blood, that he is the proud host to a supernatural force who goes by the name of Judgement. Suddenly he finds himself qualified for one job he never thought he would have, a demon slayer.

Image
Clare- Clare is the expert. She has been trained for years to fight the growing demon plague that threatens to expose itself to the rest of the world. She is a tad bit headstrong, and not always the best when it comes to giving out information. She also will never run from a fight.

Image
Ashtyn- All she wanted to be was an actress. Now she finds herself running the Demon Slayer's Inc. office, as well as doing all the major research. She is very protective of her coworkers, and never underestimates a threat. She's also known our hero since they were both freshmen in high school.

Image
Kurt- Bobby's surprisingly understanding boyfriend, and occasional researcher. He takes everything in stride, and doesn't let the increasing demonic threats get in the way of his relationship. He's also a very good cook.

Clients

Image
Felicia- Felicia is the Vice Principal of Wheaton Prep. She's the one who calls in the Demon Slayers after a student's rather odd death. She is generally warm and welcoming, although the recent events at her school are starting to dull her once bright personality. She also is a former high school friend of Bobby and Ashtyn. (Wheaton Prep Storyline)

Image
Matt- Matt runs the Wheaton Youth Center. He calls the Demon Slayers in after several female staff members go missing after walking through Lilac Park late at night. He is a caring man who has devoted most of his adult life to helping kids and young adults. After the last abduction, most people would describe Matt as a hollow shell. He also is a former high school friend of Bobby and Ashtyn. (Lilac Park Storyline)

What do you guys think? Also, what do you think of the 'stock' game idea? I know it's not the most original, but I'm surprised at how much more creative I've been when I don't have to worry about the art. (I repeat. I am NOT an artist.)

current progress : 90% Complete (beta testing, proof reading)

1/9/13
Well, I have all the music in the game. Yay! Once I get all the proof reading done, I'll release some release info. I'm thinking of going through DLSite.com. More info to come!

12/28/12
Michael just turned in the final mixed/mastered tracks, and I'm starting to place them in the game! Weee! Also, the proofreading continues. Also, after checking the Blue Forest copyright, and seeing that redrawing is okay with the majority of their art, I'm thinking about possibly hiring someone to do a few (like four or five) event CG's in the game. Hmm... Any thoughts?

12/25/12
Well... I just did a major rewrite, added two new good endings, and a few more scenes to beef up the story lines! Now it's time for sleep.

12/24/12
Opened up beta testing over at the beta testing forum!

Got Michael (ROCKYIII) working on some tracks for the game. He's already turned in two unmixed/unmastered versions, and both are amazing so far. Check him out over at this link in the forum:
http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 38&t=18598

The music isn't free, but for not that much I'm getting some great sounding music for my game.

12/22/12
Still rewriting, and waiting for the beta testing to finish up. Added an ending (which brings the ending to 5 total).

Current Game Stats:
The game contains 3,797 screens of dialogue.
These screens contain a total of 36,989 words.

I think the aspect of using all stock graphics is interesting. Do you think the restraint of only having certain "characters" and locations was helpful for your writing or do you think it held you back a bit? One thing you may want to be aware of is the relative "fame" or previous use of the stock set you're using. People may avoid your game if it uses "overused" stock or if the stock is already associated with a well known game...

Anyway, the story itself sounds kind of interesting to me. Is the existence of demons common knowledge in the world your game is set in? Does the tentacle monster in the beginning have any special significance to the story other than awakening "Judgement?"

And since you are 50% complete, do you have an estimated release date? I look forward to you posting some character info/screenshots.

Oddly enough, using stock art actually opened up my writing. Mainly it helped with the backgrounds. All of them are sold in packs, so you always end up with backgrounds you didn't always see as being something you would use, but suddenly it clicks and you realize you can use it for something. With the characters, it made me rethink how I saw the characters, and actually helped shape their personalities a little bit.

Now, I am using several of the Blue Forest character packs, which I have seen used elsewhere (namely the game Host Holic which is for sale at MangaGamer). I actually limited my male cast because that particular game uses most of the adult male models as well as child models. So it did inform my choices as I formed my cast. I also used Gimp to help edit some of the models so that I could get specific effects or looks to help add something to the game. With no event CG's, the sprite art has to hold up most of the story, and finding creative was to manipulate the sprites helped carry some of the story.

The tentacle demon at the beginning of the story. He really is just in that first part. The "big bad" of the story presents themselves later. I'm going to edit the synopsis to give more details.

As far as the release goes... I'm not going to put a date in stone, but if all goes well, it should be early 2013.

That's a good point with the backgrounds. Maybe a random location generator could have a similar effect for someone using original art?

You may want to be careful with editing unless your purchase of the sprite packs also allows you to edit the resources. I don't use stock sprites myself so I'm not sure what types of licensing terms there are regarding use of the resources.

This sounds interesting. Does this mean both storylines are present in-game but you can only do one per play-through? Will it be possible to do both or neither during a play-through? Would playing through one storyline inevitably yield clues to the other since they are interconnected?

Why 3 months has too much of a Devil May cry feel to it. Why not a few days later as he's trying to decide wither or not to do the whole demon fighting thing. The demons (now) know that "Bobby" is a demon slayer but he does not.

You have 2 or 3 games of Expy right there. "Who was Bobby's Real parents?" "Does Bobby have a 'Teen Wolf' reveal?" "Does this explain the strange blackouts and Tattoos?"

Either way, I've taken interest in this game... I'll be watching.

I actually did check about Blue Forest and editing their characters. There is only one pack that requires credit if the figures are modified, and it's one of their adult only packs made specifically for modification.

The stories are told side by side, and only certain events are seen during certain parts of the game, and certain story points are switched up. You can't "not" play one of the stories, but there is a point where you can switch which story you are following. The game is pretty close to how Eve Burst Error was set up. While there are choices in the game (and choices that can lead to bad endings), if you follow the correct path, it all leads up to one true ending. (There are four endings in total. Three bad, one true.) I tried to keep it simple since I am still learning to use the Ren'Py engine. When I make a second one however...

As for the three months... Well, it's basically that he's training during that time. It is explained in the game. The game is MUCH lighter then Devil May Cry. The secret of how he came into this power is one of big reveals within the game, actually.

How do your main characters go about fighting demons? It sounds like they form a business, and have the ability to discern demonic activity. But as the movie Ghostbusters showed, it's not easy to just set up shop and make money by removing supernatural evil. Help us understand how your characters understand the actions of demons, and how they deal with them.

It sounds like your main characters will eventually have to confront a single intelligent foe. Whether they end up fighting a human or demon with a personality, I recommend that the villain be "on scale" with them -- not weak, but not so strong that he/she would consider your characters to be insignificant.

Second, your story reminds me of Persona 4 in some ways, though it's clearly different in other ways. Key points to help make sure your VN is different:
1. The nature and origin of your main character's ability. The cast of P4 are only able to fight supernatural evil after their friends help them overcome their "shadow selves."
2. The villain. In P4, it takes a while to sort out who the real murderer is. Perhaps you'll want to make your villain clear from the outset. (Even more SPOILERS: There are two humans in P4 who seem villainous. The first is an attention-seeking insane teenager, and the second is a man who could've been the hero if not for some bad decisions. The real murderer was always active in the story, but hiding his motives very well the whole time. The final boss was also hiding in plain sight the whole time.)

It's funny you mentioned Ghostbusters, because as I'm rewriting, I'm finding myself pushing more towards that vibe. Basically the company has Clare and Bobby, who are the field agents, and Ashtyn who handles the research aspect. Clare is a trained demon hunter, while Bobby uses the power given to him by Judgement. These guys don't really capture. It's more of a rip their still beating hearts out and crush them kind of deal, though.

As for who the villain is... it's tricky, because you do know who they are pretty early on, but at the same time, you don't. I can't say anymore without giving the story away :)

For my curiosity, who is the background artist?

The company that created the backgrounds I'm using is listed as QQQnoQnoQ on the english DL site. I don't believe that is the actual company name, because the logo shows a slightly more complex Japanese name which they probably weren't able to translate. While their pack selection is pretty limited, each pack comes with several variations of each background (morning, day, dusk, night), and the art looks very clean and professional. Also, most of the packs are listed for under $20, with some smaller packs going for around $8. *Just an edit. The website for the artist is KyuKyuKyu.sakura.ne.jp . The site is Japanese. *

Character art is all from Blue Forest. They have tons of different material, with packs with different age ranges, body types and wardrobe types (from every day work clothes to fantasy characters). They also feature several adults only versions of their packs in the adults only DLSite. (I don't really need them, so I haven't checked them out. It should be noted that if you plan on purchasing any adults only packs or materials that they cannot be paid for with PayPal, due to PayPal restricting the sale of any sexually explicit materials through them.) The packs all feature different levels of customization, and some of the earlier packs feature CG art as well.

As I wait for the music, I'm continuing to make the game larger, and expand the choices available to the player. I've also removed the "True Ending" label from the one of the Endings. Mainly because I can't decide which one is going to be the "True" ending.

Well, games based on stock art is good as long as the stock arts (that are used) are good. And I like the look of your stock arts actually.
One thing I'm not too fond of is the game logo. The red color is too red and it just doesn't match with the other color (that's just my opinion though, I'm not a pro artist). It's really a pity because a good logo will make more people interested in your game!

Still, I wish you good luck.
