No kidding. You did strike gold. You know how hard it is to find brown paper sketchbooks? It's a pain in the butt to even find them online. They're always "Sold Out" or "Being Restocked". But they are great for sketching from a midtone range, and then hitting the highlights or defining areas using a Col-Erase or Prismacolor White pencil.
Really? I always had this image of the US (assuming you're from there) being the land of kraft paper! I feel extra lucky now, especially 'cause these notebooks are actually pretty affordable as opposed to the ones you can get online.
I bought for exactly that purpose though I use conte crayons/pencils at the moment... but I have some "fear" of starting to use tone/values in my drawings as long as my lines aren't good.
Maybe I should just suck it up though. You won't get anywhere without practice...and I guess it's not a crime to practice line and values at the same time.

I feel like I'm back to square one. Or maybe it's 'cause my brain feels like spaghetti thanks to exam stress.
But my studies/gestures suck. Big time. It feels like my brain is reaching some kind of meltdown. So hard to focus on stuff.
More studies. about 1 1/2 hours.
gestures. No clue what I'm doing. I keep screaming LOOK FOR S-SHAPES SSSSSSSSSS-SHAPES!!! WHERE'S THE ENERGY? WHAT IS THIS HUH? HUH? But... not feeling it today.
I think it's time to pull out Loomis and some perspective books again ^_^
