The best advice I can give, regardless of how you draw, sketch, scan, trace, ink your work, is to learn to use photoshop, Gimp, PSPro, paint.net or any other program like them. Even basic knowledge of them will do. A single canvas program like paint just won't cut it by itself and its limitation on layers and transparency will stop you quicker than you started.

There's also FireAlpaca. I've never been too happy with the sensitivity controls, but I think it's a good start if you want to try drawing on a digital program (it doesn't do heavy duty editing work like Photoshop or Gimp though).

I have to ask, are you looking up tutorials on how to color with photoshop? There's a lot of tutorials you can find on Deviantart. It may seem hard at first, but the only way to get better is to make a few crappy works at first and that way you can learn how to use the tools properly.

Yep, tutorials! Photoshop has a plethora of tutorials for all skill levels. I would suggest sticking to that since you already have it and since its support network is huge. You'll get there eventually.
Re: Sprite-Making on Paint! :D
You're going to give yourself a headache if you think you can color a scanned drawing in Paint. It's gonna be more tedious... i dont think layers are possible in paint (.__.''') Photoshop's tools may look complicated now, but you'll get used to it & you'll even enjoy the results... just practice often. Those tools gives you more flexibility in coloring than those of paint's.
My advice is to really take some time to learn learn.
Here are links to the tutorials that helped me a lot in understanding photoshop.

Paint is pretty limited with what you can do, but you can use it just to get used to digital art, or for planning and sketching out backgrounds or sprites you want to make. You shouldn't use it to actually make them, though, since pictures usually end up pixelly and sprites won't have transparency. Like a couple other people said, I think you should use Photoshop since you already have it. Just practice and get used to it~
