Meal ideas?

#1 Post by Lishy » Thu Apr 25, 2013 9:19 pm

Somewhat embarrassing question, but what are some meal ideas for breakfast and dinner? I'm kinda getting tired of hot dogs, macaroni, chicken strips, pizza, Kimchi and Chowmein noodles, and "the usual" ever day. (It's probably not healthy either due to preservatives....)

What are some ideas for dinner and breakfast? I never know what to make, and I'm getting tired of it... (The downside of being such a picky eater, heh...)

My absolute favorite meal to make for dinner is cutting a opening inside a piece of a raw chicken breast, and sticking freshly cooked bacon and cheese inside - with a little ranch to hold it all together, and then baking the chicken until it's cooked all of the way. My second favorite meal would be taking skinless chicken strips and dipping them in pancake batter and frying them in oil. ...These meals aren't really healthy though, but they are delicious. :D

As for breakfast, I don't make anything special other than french toast on occasion.

When I'm alone, I like to make big batches of food, like a whole pot of Japanese curry or a heavy soup. Then I freeze most of it, and microwave whatever I need when I get hungry. If you're leaning towards healthy, you can always try including tofu or fish with your Asian meals.

For breakfast, I usually go with the standard quick and healthy stuff like oatmeal (usually with honey or dried fruit), fried eggs with rice and seaweed, or cereal.

For breakfast, like sake, I usually eat the healthy stuff. Cereal, oatmeal (I add a lot of chocolate milk poweder here though) and occasionally some fruit salad.

As for dinner, I usually go with what my family cooks. But my most favourites are chicken curry, roasted chicken and pork adobo(This is pork cooked in vinegar, garlic, bay leaves, black peppercorns and soy sauce.).

But when I'm staying at my dorm, I content myself with the rice rolls my roomie and I make, or we try to buy some tomato sauce and we attempt to make some pasta.

I just remembered that I am a food blog fanatic and I think a fantastic blog that helps you budget, but still encourages people to try and cook new things is Budget Bytes: http://budgetbytes.blogspot.com/

If you're bored with what you eat, I really, really, encourage you to read through this girl's blog! There's lots of healthy, but flavorful and affordable recipes you could try out.

*-* This is so cool! I'll make sure to consult this site a lot when classes resume again and I start living at a dorm. The thought of living off of fast food, rice rolls and noodles for three months scares me. @_@

Ooh, food! My favorite topic!

Well, to keep it simple (I managed to make a divine Pho pot after 3 days of cooking recently), I recommend rice noodles boiled for 30 seconds, strained, then doused in cold water in a bowl. Top with sliced carrots, cucumbers, bean sprouts, grilled pork, and possibly egg roll slices. Add fish sauce and Sriracha mixture to taste.

I'm Vietnamese, so all my food concepts tend to head in that direction. XD

Lots of things. Last night we had smoked cod pie. I personally make lots of things, though stir-fries are a favorite since they are so quick. You just need a meat (or tofu or just veggies) whatever veggies you have in the fridge, a sauce (I use soy, oyster, garlic, ginger a lot) and then noodles or rice. Very simple.

When I have more time I like trying out a lot of things and there are TONNES of recipes on-line and Women's Weekly cookbooks are godly.

Egg sandwich!
1. Boil 1 egg until it's nice and hard inside. (Depending on the size of the egg, 8-10 minutes)
2. Peel the egg.
3. Run it through an egg slicer.
4. Put your favorite mayonaise on a slice of your favorite bread.
5. Put the sliced eggs on the bread.
6. Put some of your favorite mustard on the eggs.
7. Sprinkle with chopped chives
8. Put another slice of vour favorite bread on top
9. EAT!

I'm a very cheaty uni student, but I like to cook some pasta, microwave some vegetables (generally from frozen), combine, then mix in half a sachet or so of cup a soup, or a little grated cheese and butter, or mayonnaise, or whatever else. You can add ham or change flavours, or vegetables or whatever.....

Instant soups, with less water than normal added make really quick sauces, I also buy a turkey leg (cheap low-fat meat), cube it, fry it, freeze most of it. Stir fries are really easy and cheap, and you can use leftovers. Sauces you buy in supermarkets can turn one turkey leg into about 12 meals or so.

A banana actually makes a pretty good breakfast, fast, portable and healthy.

I like going to Taco Bell sometimes (for the awesome $2.50 crunchwraps), but in general I avoid fast food places because they aren't cheap and I would have to leave the house.

I highly believe in cereal, pasta, more pasta, canned food, and BIG boxes of frozen products. Gotta get those big boxes from a place like Sam's Club (in U.S.) and buy stuff in "bulk"! You will have to drop a bigger wad of cash in a single run (plus it's further away from home so I'd avoid making too many trips), but whatever, it's cool. I don't consider Walmart to be "cheap". There's this other bakery that sells bread for 80 cents per loaf!

I don't really cook my own food T_T... For pasta, I love Tuna Helper and Hamburger Helper. Almost everything else, I microwave.

Bananas, granola bars, corn dogs, and yogurt work great for snacks. For some reason I keep forgetting Pop-Tarts. Sometimes I steal a pouch whenever I visit my older brother's place, which isn't very often.

Eating Style: I dislike washing dishes, so I eat using small bowls and plates. I avoid snacking throughout the day, and the small plate conveniently can be reused for additional frozen microwave products. To be honest, my parents do actual cooking, and I often eat leftovers. I love to grab stuff out of the fridge and mix things. Dump croutons into soup, meat into pasta, etc. Almost any hot foods work well with rice. I hate rice by itself; I only use it to "lighten" salty stuff or to add into soups so I can have this less watery thing.

Because I infrequently enter the kitchen only to eat large meals with a bowl and plate, sometimes I may look like I "eat like a pig" by taking out "more food" out of the fridge when finishing each unit of food. It had given a false impression in the past mostly to my mom that I don't "eat enough" or "eat normal" and that I'm overly hooked to the computer or something.

If you want something fast, Pasta. Doesn't matter if its spaghetti or not. It's something that if you have no time you can do the bare minimum in 20 minutes. However if you want to be all fancy you can go all out. I usually make my own meatballs (turkey) and use fresh vegetables (onions, garlic, mushrooms) w/ store bought sauce. If you're only making for yourself, using one box of spaghetti can last you the week (depends on your portions).

Also I don't do this anymore because I like to buy in bulk and I never eat enough in time for it to be worth it. Potatoes. You can either just bake the whole thing or cut it up and add spices and ketchup for fries/wedges.

As for breakfast, cereal, waffles, french toast, pancakes (chocolate chip). you could always buy stuff like a can of whipped cream or applesauce to jazz it up.

Also I like baked salmon. It's a fish that doesn't require crazy seasoning. But buy it fresh or frozen by the store if you can. Don't buy those "salmon" boxes from the frozen dinner aisle. I tried this Alaska brand and that shit was not Salmon. They shouldn't be allowed to sell whatever garbage the put in that box and call it Salmon.

But when I want to follow from a recipe, I go to allrecipes.com. Good stuff there.
