What's the best resolution to use on a novel?

#1 Post by Rebirth » Mon Apr 29, 2013 2:37 pm

Hello guys, me and some friends are doing this project to create a VN, but even that we are used to play VNs.
We are amateurs on doing one, so I was try to discover what is the most common resolution used for amateur novels.
We are starting doing the art and the BGs, so I searched a while and saw that each one choose a different resolution.
Some use 800x600 and others use 1280x768. I was thinking in use 800x600 but we want do something good and enjoyable for playing, so for this reason I wanted to ask another people about what's the best resoution to use.

Everyone has their own preference. But if you'd like to read some opinions/what other people are doing you can check out these topics:

Good luck deciding :>.

I personally prefer something bigger than 800x600.

1920x1080 ftw.

Or else 1600x900.

Your best bet is 16:9 - 16:10 or standard 4:3
I use 1,280×720

Short answer: bigger is better.
Not-so-short answer:
- Bigger is better, but it also takes more RAM and process. So your game can be laggy in slower PC.
- That means lower is faster, but it may not look that pretty.
- You also need to consider the player's monitor native resolution. If you set the resolution at 1280x720, it looks bad at 800x600 monitor.
- Also a big resolution pics will be pain to read in small monitor.

I was torn between 1280x720 and 1280x768 for mine, but went with 1280x720. I didn't go with higher because my monitor is 1366x768, so I felt like that would make it harder for me to properly edit the art. 800x600, well.... felt needlessly small. I would consider it if I were doing something educational and wanted wide compatibility. But I wasn't.

Almost nobody has a PC that can't support a 1280x720 game - 800x600 is really tiny. Full HD is where it might get laggy if your computer is really old, so if in doubt use 720p.

The 1024x768 resolution has decreased at a quick rate during the past four years and was surpassed by 1336x768 in March 2013 [TPU]. Other larger resolutions are on a slower but steady rise (except my beloved 1440x900 T_T).

According to Sources [1] and [2], 800x600 makes up for less than 1% of users as of January 2013. Source [3] says 1.87%, but that is still very low. The next step up in size, 1024x768, currently makes up for approximately 9% of users. I recommend using 1024x768 if you do not want to go any further.

A 1080p Ren'Py game (e.g. Rising Angels) will display windowed at 1336x751 on a 1440x900 monitor. At stock settings, I have no problems reading the dialogue text, though it is noticeably smaller. This is comparable to running a 1280x720/800 game windowed at 698x392/436 on a 800x600 monitor (tested with virtual machine). Thankfully, fullscreen black bars were added since Ren'Py 6.11.0.

Note that you should generally increase text size when making larger games and possibly make the textbox less as wide. See attached screenshot. (My font size for Notepad is set to 8.)

And if you are really concerned Keep one of each ratio on your site.

16:9 or 16:10 and 4:3 It's a total pain in the bottom and there are the black bars but you can still have both.

I'm going overboard one at 1080, 720 and XGA. the first 2 just require a font change really the last will require minor code adjustments.

Thanks guys, your opinions was really helpfull, we already decided by a 1280x720 resolution, if we have some problems with this, we will change and use 1024x768 one (Well we are amateurs so we are trying different things until we find one that works better for us :D )

I think you could try to make 2 versions : hd one, middle quality one. 1280x720 is good, as for the first, 1080p or 1600x900.

Just sayin', you're the one deciding after all.

This! It really depends... personally I'd stick with 800 x 600 but that's just me and my upcoming works. If you are doing basic OELVN without the fancy complex animations then you can go as high as you want... Ren'py 6.13 can scale down or up things pretty nicely (assuming you are using Ren'py) but in case you do use complex animations or anything that will stress PC performance then a smaller resolution like 1024 x 768 will be a nice compromise between performance and quality... it will still look (somewhat) good when scaled up on larger screens and still perform well on older systems...

The problem with the old 4:3 system is... well no one uses it any more. There are a few left but unless you are living where 1998 has just arrived then Wide is it. The only issue in today's games is scale. If you want it to run on a Phone or tablet you need it to by physically but still would be in Wide format. If you are wanting to use it on a Full rig... who the hell even USES 4:3 screens any more?

anyway my point is 4:3 (800x600) is a dead resolution. Really anything "boxy" is a dead resolution. Using it tends to make games look quaint and "old."
