Q: What the hell is this?
A: Anime character generator. You can generate character sprites using free (mostly licensed under CC licenses) parts. You can select layers, recolor things, crop and resize your image. Result can be exported as transparent png, or even automatically inserted into RenPy ( http://renpy.org ) game script.

Q: What platforms are supported? Is it Windows only?
A: Windows, MacOS and Linux builds are all avaliable for download. IIcharacter uses RenPy as a crosplatform framework.

Q: Why do anyone would need this?
A: It may be a good source of sprites and templates for amateur visual novels creators, or just for people who want to create an anime avatar picture at a forum.

Q: Is it better then KHmix 1st Edition ( キャラクターなんとか機 )?
A: It's up to you to deside. Original idea was to create a software that allows to select only details that perfectly fit each other. Other good features of IIcharacter are layer grouping, flexibility of adding new layers, colors and stuff as easy as just renaming files and creating folders. It is also cross-platform and comes with lots of bundled graphics.

Q: Have you drawn all this pictures by yourself?
A: No, I'm not an artist at all (in fact, not really a good python coder too, hehe). Artists are atributed near character set name. Licenses are displayed too, if known.

Q: Do you need any help with this project?
A: Yes, I need translators and someone who would like to write any documentation for it. You can send bugreports too.

Q: What music is playing in the video?

Q: Why is it so %s? Why there is no %s?
A: It is still an alpha version. Also, it is open source, so you can fork it or send a patch which makes it better. You can even write your own modules for it to do stuff like even more specific export.

Q: How do you feel about this release?
A: A lot of work was done in those several years for grouping, translating and renaming layers. IIcharacter is more about character sets that I have gathered and presented to english speaking people, not about program which allows to use it.

This is really nice, and I hope people will get a lot of use out of it - and especially, that people will come up with new sprite-families to be used with it.

One issue I had is that there are a few bogus characters in the credits list. (See after Allinardo here.) This might be a problem with Ren'Py, but I'm not sure what you're trying to display. See the screenshot.

About this small issue - I think it should be "\r" character. I show names in credits as first lines of some files. Seems like some files have "\r\n" in the end and some don't. Most tests were done under Windows version, where issue does not appear.

Yes. Always.
-- Rule of thumb: If you didn't actually make it, (sound, music, images, graphics...) --> Credit.

Yes, language is English. But some translation were made to English from Japanese, both languages are not my native, so there may be some errors and misprints.
Yes, there are male sprite sets.

Hey, I just discovered this and it seems super useful, though I haven't had much time to play around with it yet. One thing that was odd though is that when extracting the windows zip, I was prompted for a password for a few files. I was forced to skip them. Anyone else encounter that?

For the benefit of other people using the tool I'd like to point out that the Kaoru Touhou Sets actually have a male option, "Generic Male". I almost missed it because the main menu didn't list that set as being able to make male characters. Made me very happy to learn otherwise, as I'm having a lot more trouble finding male sprites than female ones right now. Also, there's a "Generic Female" option, as well as a fair amount of customization for a few of the character specific-sprites, so even if you're not interested in making a Touhou related VN you may still want to check out that set.

Please, let me know, if you have any success stories of using this.

This is a great program-- I'd love to see some of the newer free sprites included. Also posted here because I keep losing this thread. >> I always end up looking in the Creative Commons.
