So I draw some basic art. Mainly tattoos and some chibi drawings for people.
Example:

What I am wondering is can I turn these type of drawings into sprites? And I've always wondered how people go about coloring their art.

haha yeah no she isn't a good drawing just one I felt like posting as an example. i went though some of the forums and they are fairly useful. Found a tutorial about using gimp to clear up line art and had fun coloring my first image on the computer ^^

Lol, I don't even understand how they get the transparency around the sprite itself.

Just select the white surrounding your sprite and delete it, then save it into a PNG file and everything works fine ^^
