The Wayward Hospital - Barebones Script Testing

#1 Post by Morhighan » Wed Nov 06, 2013 10:48 pm

Hi there!

I was looking to revive an old project of mine and found, to my shock, that the script was done!
So I decided to feed it back into renpy and mess around with it.
I'm pretty pleased with it right now, but I think it could use some outside opinions before I start in on the art.
The game is attached below. The current build is 0.9.
So, if you please, tell me what you think! :D

Thank you for your time, it really helps me.

Name: The Wayward Hospital
Genre: Survival Horror
Playtime: (You tell me!)
Multiple Endings, choose carefully!

It took me about twenty minutes to read through to the end. I chose the nosy/investigating options, because after all it is survival horror. Anyway, my impressions:

I was impressed by the writing. Sure, in some spots it could use some polish, but it captures the mood I think you're going for quite well.
With the pacing, it sets off slow (which is good.. because horror in this kind of story is supposed to creep up on you), but I think it jumps too abruptly to the end. I would write in a few more scenes showing the main character what is not-quite-right about this place to maintain the slow buildup in the beginning. All we get is a stuck drawer and a conversation through a door that might be sinister and might not be, and the fact that all the proof is just conveniently there when the drawer finally gets unstuck shortens the story more than perhaps it needs. Maybe the drawer could have some other clue, or maybe it could have the absence of folders, and evidence that they were recently and hastily moved (scraps of paper on the bottom of the drawer, a bent and empty folder, that kind of thing).
So in short, the story was well-done, but needs some more smoothing between the beginning and the end.
Also, while I felt that the villain was handled well (if in a way I would expect from this genre), I wasn't sure why Amelie wanted revenge? I might have missed that part. It looks like the main character has some dark backstory, too, but we don't learn much about it.
The tone is quite serious... almost reminds me of 19th century horror like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or Dracula. I thought I would mention that, because it would be easy to undermine the mood with a too bold or bright art style.

Anyway, those are my thoughts and opinions. Good luck with the project. :)

@ketskari -
Thanks! That's just what I needed to hear, actually. I was a bit concerned about the abruptness. This story is actually somewhat of a sequel to another, however for some reason I have not written the first. ((I think I had some "brilliant" idea about having the second story start you off in the mystery and then going back to the first. XD))
I'm definitely wanting a darker style in the art department, I just have to get back into drawing. ;3
Thanks much!
