Prices too High???

#1 Post by Clockworkjoker » Mon Jul 21, 2014 10:50 pm

I'm very new to Lemmasoft, I came her by suggestion from a friend to see if I could grab a few commissions. I have posted once in the recruitment forums and so far I haven't gotten a single reply. It is a little discouraging and I'm not sure if I did something wrong or did not formally introduce myself if I was suppose to or that my prices are entirely too pricey. I have done commissions before on da on another account but that was for very cheap points before I knew how the point system worked. It could be a number of things, maybe I'm not well known or maybe I'm not active here and da or not something people are looking for because my digital art isn't as creative and unique because it's in the style of anime. I could really use some suggestions so that I can get a few commissions. Here is an example of my prices.

Complete change in character's pose will be considered an additional character

Thigh up= $15(per character)

Full body= $25

Extra Outfit and Hair: $10

Headshot / Expression Palette: $5.50

Have you tried advertising on Tumblr? Your prices aren't high at all, but I think you'd have more luck there than here. On LSF, most people who don't draw want sprite artists for their projects. And unfortunately, a lot of those people would prefer the work to be free since most of us don't have a budget to pay a person for their art.

But yeah, being active here, showing off your art in the Art Dump thread or making a personal art thread for exposure could help get some people to buy.

Those prices seem extremely reasonable to me given the level of quality, but I don't know what other factors commissioners have to consider. I don't think they're too high, though- from what I've seen in terms of price lists they seem quite competitive in that quality bracket. I don't know why there's a lack of interest.

Thank you Mai, I do have a tumblr, I have sort of forgotten about tumblr since I am learning to maneuver around the site especially with keeping track of things there. Idk what advice I would give anyone here on this site since it seem really forum best but I will give it a shot. Thank you

For starters, your art is very good and the price is actually on the cheaper side, so please don't feel discouraged. From what I've seen in my time here, there are a bunch of amazing artists like yourself and just not enough commercial projects to cover them all straight away. Then you have people like myself who are limited on time or are more at home using a recruitment post to have artists come to them and apply for positions rather than looking through all the recruitment posts on the forum. All the advice I can give is apply to any job that tickles your fancy and be a little patient. Something will come along for you.

Maybe not being well known or not unique enough of an art style could be the problem. idk Asceai, thank you for replying to my post however :). Kind of happy to know that they aren't as overly priced as I thought they would be. I was extremely excited to do commissions but now I am not sure. I see now why my high school teacher said he was a starving artist.

Maybe I should try and pick up on the recruitment it might be easier...might be. And thank you for replying Kato. These suggestions and replies do help me feel less worried about getting commissions. Orz, I feel like a sap lol.

This is just a personal observation as well, but I think there are some improvements on your art that could be made. Coloring wise you're fine, but the bunny girl's facial anatomy is kind of throwing me off.

I wouldn't worry about being "generic" anime since if you think about it, the fact that people still draw it means that there are buyers, they just want it decently drawn.

I see what's throwing you off about her face lol? Decently drawn I know what you mean, I won't give up getting commissions.

I think as previously mentioned, you could stand to work on the anatomy a little more, the girl's neck is a little lopsided/slanted. Also you could make more examples of VN style sprites to cater to your audience, for example guys and other girls in different perspectives. Right now you have too few examples for people to make an informed decision. I think having something like 4-5 examples of different sprites would work wonders for your portfolio.

For her neck I was trying to cover part of it, I guess I didnt excute the look I wanted very well, I thought it looked odd at first but staring at line art and coloring after an hour or so you just dismiss it. I will have to go back and fix it thank you for pointing that out. As for making more sprites in digferent poses I thats a good idea too. Im wondering if my first post did not have enough exampke I had ahout 5 or six up.

Oh, my bad - I didn't check your post and assumed those were all your samples.

In your original post I think your first character art is nice, though she has an overly pointy chin that is messing it up. In the purple haired girl's poses, there's also something a little off about the face. The girl's skintone is also off, in the purple haired girl's pic, unless it was meant to look really pale. I think you should be able to make some minor edits and make it a little more appealing, mainly working on the facial shape and proportions.

Otherwise though, your art quality's nice and your prices aren't too high, I don't think. But you could try reducing them if you don't get business, and then gradually raising them over time as you get more examples and clientele.
