Sword Daughter [GxB] [Fantasy] [Commercial]
All your life, you've dreamed of adventure. Shining armor, slashing swords, fierce dragons, gleaming treasure... all the honor and the glory that can be yours. But you're more than just a dreamer, you're a warrior in training. You've spent years practicing and learning to be a fighter so that one day you can go on a glorious quest and become a great hero, just like your father.
But when tragedy strikes, will you be able to hold on to your dreams?
Along the way, you may encounter:
A stern elven ranger
A friendly desert guide
A dispossessed prince
A mad wizard
Or... maybe you won't. Maybe you'll just be eaten by monsters right off the bat. Turn back to Page 1 and try again.
This is a licensed adaptation of a fantasy gamebook (yes, a real book) from the 1980s. Every section ends in a choice, and every choice branches the story. So there are a lot of different ways this story can turn out! You can meet totally different characters from run to run, and finding the most heroic outcome may require many attempts. This is not a game to play through just once.
(And yes, there is romance! And monsters. And treasure. And BAD ENDS.)
For more information visit the official webpage.

Re: Fantasy Gamebook Adventure [GxB] [Commercial]
I asked.
No, that's really what it boils down to. I stumbled across a somewhat obscure gamebook and thought it had potential for an otome game. It was out of print, and some extra research suggested that the rights had reverted to the author, so I contacted her and pitched the project, and after some discussion we settled on contract terms.
This sort of thing is a lot easier when you can identify an individual author. I've tried to reach out to publishing houses in the past for some really old properties that nobody's using, but they couldn't figure out who actually held the rights in order to negotiate. Which is a shame when you have nearly-forgotten books stuck in copyright limbo because someone renewed the copyright in the 1970s.

This sounds amazing. The fact that it was originally an old adventure book is awesome and the art looks fantastic. I'm really looking forward to this ^^.

Wow, I'm looking forward to this. I've always loved Fighting Fantasy books, and to see an otome version of one being made makes me smile. :) And it's pretty cool you got permission to make it, too!

Whoa, this looks so awesome! I seriously cannot wait for this to come out. Cause when it does, I'm going to pounce on it!
Question: (Hope you don't mind me asking, if you can't say yet then that's just peachy too!) Who is the artist(s) working on this? It's a lot different style-wise from all of the other vns Hanako Games has put out. Was there any specific reason for using this drasticically different (but still awesome) art style?

The artist is Kim Sokol, who does a lot of work for RPGs, and is awesome.sasquatchii wrote:Whoa, this looks so awesome! I seriously cannot wait for this to come out. Cause when it does, I'm going to pounce on it!

I don't have any staff artists, so it's often a matter of who's available when I'm looking to start a project. I looked at several more anime-style artists as well, but since this does have old-school fantasy credentials, I was also checking the availability of fantasy-painting artists in the hopes of being able to attract some fans from the D&D side of things. By chance she was looking for work as I was looking for artists, and I like her style so I thought I'd give that a try.

Wow I think this is really smart! Looking for an old book somewhere that could hold potential for an otome game If I may ask, will you pay the author royalty for each sale?

Details of contract negotiations are confidential. All I can say is that I do have a contract.

I'm liking the look of this, great art and being based on an already published book means the writing has passed muster at least once! I loved old CYOA books so I'm really looking forward to this!

All the way to the elves. I always choose the elven romance if they are available. It has come to my blood that elf is priority. I like the concept of gamebook. Have been trying TinMan Games and Choice of Games few years now. I hope to see more updates on this soon!
